Plastic and plastics are harmful and dangerous

Plastic and plastics are harmful and dangerous. What are plastic and plastics, what types exist, what is their danger and how can they be avoided.

Plastic and plastics surround us everywhere in everyday life. From disposable tableware to diapers. But have you ever wondered what they are made of and how they can affect our body and health in general?

Even while in school I knew that plastic and plastics have a destructive effect on the environment.

A simple plastic water bottle will take about 600!!! years to only partially decompose! And how many of these bottles do people buy every day around the world?

Unfortunately, in Russia they still have not started recycling plastic. And at least because of this alone, it is possible and necessary to limit its use.

No one had even mentioned before what effect plastic and plastics can have directly on our body.

You will probably ask, how can it even affect us, we do not eat it?!?

I hate to disappoint you, but the chemicals present in plastic tableware and other plastic items enter our body not only through the food and drinks in which they were stored, but can also enter the lungs or penetrate through the skin, and from there – into the circulatory system and spread throughout the body.

Plastic and its danger

The danger lies in the fact that along with unnatural chemicals, plastic and plastics also contain toxins. And these toxins get into the food products that are stored in them and that we subsequently consume.

Studies are even more frightening, saying that these substances can penetrate through the skin barrier and the respiratory system. Even a tiny amount of these substances is enough to disrupt the delicate balance of our body.

The most common plastic toxins are Bisphenol-A and Phthalate. These substances give plastic elasticity and strength.

Unfortunately, they affect our body in a completely different way. They completely disrupt our hormonal balance, as they are pseudo-hormones, which leads to serious consequences.

Bisphenol-A (Bisphenol-A) — a substance of synthetic nature used for the production of plastic and rubber. According to the latest data, more than 95% of people will have Bisphenol-A detected in a urine test. Once in the body, BPA behaves like the female hormone estrogen.

Phthalate (Phthalate) — an industrial chemical added to plastic to give it flexibility and strength. In our body it imitates the male hormone – testosterone, with all the ensuing consequences.

The effect of pseudo-toxins on our body:

  • They reduce the protective function of the immune system.
  • They lead to irreversible changes in brain cells.
  • They damage liver cells.
  • They contribute to the development of heart and circulatory system diseases.
  • They increase the risk of developing diabetes.
  • They accelerate puberty.
  • They have carcinogenic activity, that is, they provoke the development of cancer cells.

Even if plastic and plastic items have the label “BPA free,” “Does not contain Bisphenol-A” — that still doesn’t mean they are safe. Often manufacturers simply start using Bisphenol-S, which may be even more toxic.

Types of plastic and plastic

Take any plastic or plastic item and look at its back surface. That is usually where numbers are stamped, giving us, consumers, a rough idea of what we are buying.

This is my recent discovery. I think many still have no idea. Let me enlighten you:

  • #1 PET (Polyethylene Terephtalate/Polyethylene Terephthalate) is considered safe, but the possibility of migration of metallic elements has been proven.
  • #2 HDPE (High Density Polyethylene/High Density Polyethylene) is considered a low-hazard plastic, but scientists do not rule out the possibility of leaching of substances contained in it that alter hormonal balance.
  • #3 PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride/Polyvinyl Chloride) is considered hazardous to health, contains a type of Phthalate that has increased toxicity.
  • #4 LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene/Low Density Polyethylene) is ranked as a low-hazard plastic.
  • #5 PP (Polypropylene/Polypropylene) is considered the safest of all plastics.
  • #6 PS (Polystyrene/Polystyrene or styrofoam) is very toxic, since the Sterol contained in it provokes the development of cancer cells.
  • #7 (All others or <a pig in a poke>) is the most dangerous and unpredictable, since it may contain a mixture of the 6 listed above or other chemicals. According to the latest data, it is precisely this type that contains the largest amount of Bisphenol-A.

I would like to note that even plastic and plastics, named in this list as safe, are not actually safe. Bisphenol-A and Phthalates can also migrate from #5 Polypropylene.

So the safest option would be to avoid all plastic and plastics and prefer glass, wood, metal, and paper.

How to avoid the use of plastic and plastics

  • Don’t buy water in plastic bottles. Buy yourself a stainless steel bottle.
  • Don’t buy or use plastic bags. Get a couple of reusable bags made from more natural materials.
  • Don’t heat plastic dishes. As the temperature rises, the rate at which chemicals seep into food increases. By sipping hot tea or coffee from a plastic mug, up to 50% more Bisphenol-A enters your body.
  • If you can’t give up plastic dishes, then at least get rid of scratched and damaged ones, as this increases the risk of toxins leaching out.
  • Avoid metal cans. Bisphenol-A and Phthalate are frequent guests there.
  • These destroyers of hormonal balance are especially dangerous for a child’s still undeveloped body. Avoid children’s rubber toys, especially poor-quality ones. Most children’s plastic bottles contain Bisphenol-A and Phthalates. Please buy glass or metal dishes for your little one. Try to avoid using diapers, as they also contain these chemicals.

I won’t hide it, but I was a fan of plastic and plastic products for many years. They won me over with their durability, convenience, and, of course, price.

Now I try to avoid plastic wherever I can. Especially if it has anything to do with food.

I have already replaced all plastic food storage containers with glass ones. And even if we buy disposable tableware, it’s only paper. Canned tin cans are a rare occurrence in our family. We filter water at home and take it with us in stainless steel bottles.

I think anyone can do this. Together we can make a difference not only for our own health, but also for the benefit of the environment and our entire planet, which is already so heavily polluted.
