Dreams After a Funeral: Why the Deceased Come, What Scientists Say, and Stories That Came True

Dreams after a funeral are among the most profound and meaningful in a person’s life. They come at a moment when the soul is torn apart by pain, when the mind refuses to believe in the loss, and the heart seeks any way to preserve the connection with the departed. Research shows that most people experience such dreams after a loss, and they play a crucial role in the healing process.

In this article, we will examine why the deceased come in dreams, what scientists say about this, which dreams come true, and how to interpret them correctly.

If you want to check your symbols, go to the dream interpretation app. It contains thousands of real examples from our project and a complete database of dreams about meetings with the departed that came true.

What Scientists Say: Dreams About the Deceased Are Normal

Modern science calls such dreams “dreams of the deceased” – dreams about the dead . This phenomenon is not only widespread but also serves an important psychological function.

Numbers That Impress. According to research, about 60-80% of people have seen the deceased in a dream at least once . Among those who have experienced the loss of a loved one, 58% regularly have such dreams . At the same time, 60% of people who have experienced a loss confirm that these dreams influenced their grieving process – most often in a positive way .

Who more often has such dreams. Research shows that 60% of women and 40% of men report dreams about deceased loved ones . This does not mean that men have such dreams less often – perhaps they remember them less often or talk about them less often.

Why specifically before holidays. Before Easter, Christmas, Remembrance Day – any holidays associated with family traditions – such dreams become more frequent . We think more about those who have passed, recall moments spent together, plan to visit the cemetery. During sleep, the brain processes precisely what was important during the day. Psychologists call this “activation of memory and emotional connections” – when significant people “return” in dreams so that the psyche can integrate these experiences .

Three main functions of such dreams. Dream researcher Joshua Black identifies three key functions of dreams about the deceased :

  • Processing grief and trauma

  • Maintaining an emotional connection with the deceased

  • Emotion regulation

In other words, the brain does not “let go” of a person immediately – it gradually adapts to the loss. Dreams help us live through grief without falling apart.

Why the deceased come in dreams: perspectives

From a scientific point of view. Scientists explain the appearance of the deceased in dreams by the work of memory and emotions. The brain stores images of significant people and “plays out” scenarios of interaction with them during sleep . This happens especially often in the first year after a loss, when the experiences are especially intense .

From a psychological perspective. Dreams about the deceased are a projection of longing, guilt, unfinished relationships or severe stress. They help complete the gestalt, close what was left unsaid.

From the perspective of spiritual traditions. In different cultures, such dreams are perceived as real communication with the departed. Researcher Smiljana Đorđević-Belić identifies several types of such dreams in Serbian culture:

  • Dreams about the “unrested deceased” (who lacks something in the afterlife)

  • Dreams in which the deceased show the afterlife

  • Dreams in which the deceased convey messages, advice or warnings

  • Dreams that are interpreted as the deceased calling you to join them

Types of dreams after a funeral

In our project’s practice, several types of dreams that come after a funeral have emerged.

Comforting dreams. The deceased comes young, beautiful, in light-colored clothing, smiling, says they are well, and asks you not to cry. Such dreams bring relief and help accept the loss.

Warning dreams. The deceased comes with an anxious appearance, asks for something, warns of danger. Such dreams cannot be ignored – they often come true.

Dreams about unfinished relationships. The deceased comes with what was left unsaid between you. This is an opportunity to say goodbye and let go.

Dreams of returning. The deceased comes to the living as if nothing had happened. This symbolizes the return of what seemed lost forever.

A dream that came true: “Don’t cry, I’m fine here”

The dream came right after the 40 days. My state is understandable to everyone who has buried loved ones, without any description. It was incredibly hard. I dreamed of my dad. Young, handsome (like in the photographs from his youth!), in light, good clothes, serene and even, probably, cheerful. He told me not to cry, that he was fine here. He said “don’t cry, go to people.” And I had indeed shut myself up at home, hadn’t gone anywhere, hadn’t talked to anyone, just cried.

I woke up in the morning and understood that he was fine there. I left the house, went to work, met with my girlfriends, and I began to let go. And very gently and naturally at that. I started to recover.

This dream is a classic example of a comforting dream. Dad came in his best form – young, handsome, in light clothes. He didn’t just say he was fine – he showed it with his appearance. He also gave practical advice – “go to people.” And when the participant followed this advice, the pain began to let go.

Another dream also came after the 40 days. In a certain spacious establishment, the entire paternal side of the family was gathered. Relatives on my dad’s side. The living members of the family occupy places at tables on one half of the cafe, while the relatives who have passed away are opposite. I am among those still in the world of the living, and my dad is among those who have already departed. There is a distance between us, we look at each other across the entire space of the cafe.

Here the separation of worlds is shown – the departed on one side, the living on the other. But they are still nearby, they still see us.

What scientists say: dreams about the deceased are normal

Research shows that women more often report dreams about deceased loved ones than men. This does not mean that men have such dreams less often – perhaps they remember them less often or talk about them less often.

How the brain processes loss during sleep. Neuroscientists note that in people experiencing complicated grief, dreams about the deceased contain specific changes. Research shows that in such dreams there can be both an intensification and a limitation of emotional content, which reflects the brain’s attempts to reorganize the mental representations of the person who has passed away. The brain literally “restructures” the images of loved ones in order to adapt to their absence.

Studies of palliative patients. Particularly revealing data have been obtained in studies of people nearing the end of life. Scientists have found that before death, people more often dream of deceased loved ones and symbols of transition – doors, staircases, light. Such dreams bring peace and reduce the fear of the end of life.

Dr. Christopher Kerr from a hospice in New York, who conducted research in this area, notes: “Interestingly, these are not random people – they are always those who loved and supported you.” The frequency of such dreams increases as death approaches, since dying is a gradual sleep, and people constantly transition between sleep and wakefulness, making their dreams more vivid and realistic.

The three main functions of such dreams. Researchers identify three key functions of dreams about the deceased:

  • Processing grief and trauma

  • Maintaining an emotional connection with the deceased

  • Emotion regulation

In other words, the brain does not “let go” of a person immediately – it gradually adapts to the loss. Dreams help us live through grief without falling apart.

Why the deceased come in dreams: three perspectives

From a scientific point of view. Scientists explain the appearance of the deceased in dreams by the work of memory and emotions. The brain stores images of significant people and “replays” scenarios of interaction with them in sleep. This happens especially often in the first year after a loss, when the experiences are especially intense.

From a psychological point of view. Dreams about the deceased are a projection of longing, guilt, unfinished relationships, or severe stress. They help complete the gestalt, to close what was left unsaid.

From the point of view of esoteric science. Some experts believe that during sleep the soul travels to astral dimensions, where it can meet deceased relatives who convey important messages or warn of danger. In different cultures, such dreams are perceived as real communication with those who have passed on.

How to distinguish a prophetic dream from an ordinary one

Experts identify several signs by which you can distinguish a prophetic dream from an ordinary one:

It is realistic. Prophetic dreams look like reality. They contain clear, vivid images – sometimes with smells, tastes, or an unusual tactile texture.

You will definitely remember it. Prophetic dreams are remembered for a long time. Unlike ordinary dreams, which are quickly forgotten, prophetic ones leave a vivid trace in the memory.

It contains an important message. A prophetic dream holds the answers to your current questions. Even if you do not understand it right away, over time the meaning is revealed.

It leaves an “aftertaste.” After a prophetic dream, a residue arises – good or bad. You feel that the dream is not simple, but meaningful, that it contains a lot of important information.

Prophetic dreams often feature real people. Especially often – the deceased. The brain uses them as associative markers of connection.

Experts also note that prophetic dreams have a peculiarity: they can be extremely strange and have varied plots. This is also a kind of indicator of a prophetic dream. As a rule, prophetic dreams come true within the next two years, so you shouldn’t dismiss what you saw if the dream doesn’t come true within a month.

What to do if you dream of a deceased person after a funeral

If you dream of a deceased person after a funeral, don’t be scared. This is a natural process of saying goodbye and accepting loss.

Write down the dream. Immediately after waking up, write down all the details before they are forgotten. Write down your feelings during the dream and after waking up.

Don’t be afraid. The deceased come in dreams not to harm. They come to say goodbye, comfort, warn, or simply be near. This is a normal reaction of the psyche. According to research, most such dreams are either neutral or bring comfort.

Listen to the message. If the deceased says something, listen. It could be important information or advice. Dr. Kerr from a New York hospice notes that dreams about deceased loved ones are very common among people experiencing serious life changes, and most often evoke a feeling of “peace” and “comfort.”

Light a candle. If you dream of a deceased relative, light a candle and pray. This helps both you and the soul of the deceased.

Don’t hold onto the pain. If the dream was difficult, give yourself time to grieve. Dreams after a funeral are part of the healing process.
