A car in a dream is one of the most dynamic and telling symbols. It shows the movement of your affairs. You need to take into account whether the car is yours or someone else’s. Where you are driving it. And who is behind the wheel. Whether there are passengers. All of this information from the dream points to the circumstances that will follow soon.
In this article I will explain what a car dream means, what a new, old, crashed, red, white, black car means, who is behind the wheel, and how this is connected to your life. At the end I will give a real fulfilled dream and show how the symbol manifested in life.
If you want to check your symbols, go to the dream interpretation app. It contains thousands of real examples from our project, a complete database of fulfilled dreams, and more than 7000 symbols with interpretations that are not available publicly.
What a car means in a dream: the main symbol
A car in a dream is a symbol of your movement through life, your decisions, your control over the situation.
An automobile in a dream symbolizes our motivations. To drive it easily and quickly is a sign of the imminent fulfillment of plans, and a fairly successful one at that. Since a car is a personal vehicle, it always in some way concerns the dreamer. Individuality.
Decision-making. Control over the situation. Our ambitions, desires, preferences, impulses. In general, all aspects of a person’s individuality that are “visible” to the whole world, to the people around us whom we meet, and that one displays, shows by “going out into society.”
Our independence. Our personal space. Our “face” in society, since for many, and this is especially important for men, their status is directly connected to the class of the car. The dreamer’s attitude toward a specific car. Since a car is a means of increased danger, in a dream it very often reflects our sense of danger.
Dreams about cars do not point to the past. Cars are connected with movement, affairs, roads. Therefore all dreams about cars are about the future. Often about the near future.
If you want to check your symbols, go to the dream interpretation app. It contains thousands of real examples from our project, a complete database of fulfilled dreams, and more than 7000 symbols with interpretations that are not available publicly.
Who is behind the wheel: meaning for interpretation
One of the most important details of a dream about a car is who is behind the wheel.
You are behind the wheel. This is the most favorable option. You control your life, make decisions, and are responsible for the consequences. You choose your own path. The dream speaks of your independence and confidence.
Your husband or boyfriend is behind the wheel. You trust him to steer your life or your life together. This can be both positive (you feel safe) and negative (you feel that you do not control the situation).
An unfamiliar man is behind the wheel. You are entrusting your life to a stranger or are under the influence of other people. Be attentive to new acquaintances and offers.
A woman is behind the wheel. A woman behind the wheel may symbolize your girlfriend, colleague, or your inner feminine energy. Perhaps you should trust your intuition more.
A child is behind the wheel. A child behind the wheel is a dangerous situation. You have entrusted control to someone who is not ready for it. The dream warns of rash decisions or that someone is not coping with responsibility.
You are a passenger. You do not control the situation. You are entrusting your future to someone. The dream may indicate that you are too passive or dependent on others.
A fulfilled dream: the car loses control
This dream is a vivid example of how the subconscious can show an event that is happening at that very moment in another place.
As I promised, [I will] write down a dream that I had about 15 years ago. It came true in the morning. More precisely, I understood it in the morning, but it was coming true at the moment when I was dreaming it.
I dream of my husband and his sister riding in a truck. My husband is behind the wheel, turning off the main street onto an adjacent one.
Suddenly the car loses control and turns into a sled. My husband and his sister are flying down a mountain at mad speed. His sister, frightened, jumps off the sled and remains safe and unharmed, while my husband keeps flying on the sled, in summer, down the mountain over the asphalt.
At full speed my husband crashes into a parked “heel” (a Moskvich) and disappears inside its body. I stand there in horror and think that it’s over, my husband has crashed to death. But then he crawls out of the car, and there is a huge hematoma on his head. I look and cannot make out where my husband’s face is.
When in a dream I saw my husband “flying,” I distinctly heard children’s voices. Judging by the voices, the boys were about 15 years old. I look at my husband and think that such a bruise won’t just go away on its own and I hope it doesn’t get complicated. Maybe it will turn out that way and he’ll have to have a craniotomy. I woke up in horror, my heart was pounding.
In the morning my husband and I went to visit his younger brother. We meet the neighbors. They tell us that his brother stole someone else’s car from their father’s garage at night (a sled on asphalt in summer, he had no right to get behind the wheel, he didn’t have a license and the car belonged to someone else, a rare classic car).
He himself jumped out of the car and, frightened, ran away (the sister jumped off the sled), but his friend ended up in the hospital. By evening he had surgery – a craniotomy (the hematoma on my husband’s head). Later we learned the details, that the brother lost control on a turn (the husband turned off the main road).
And the children’s voices, I heard in the dream at the moment when the boys were rolling over in the car in reality. When the boys started telling the details of the accident, it turned out that they were shouting the very words I had heard in the dream.
This dream shows how the subconscious works: it can pick up information about events happening at the same moment to loved ones, even if you are far away.
The condition of the car in a dream
The more beautiful and expensive the car in your dream, the more favorable circumstances await you in the near future. It is important that the car is in good working order.
A new, beautiful car. The dream foretells success, new opportunities, improvement of your situation. You are ready for new beginnings. Your affairs will go uphill. If the car is expensive and prestigious – success will be significant and noticeable to those around you.
An old, broken car. The dream warns of problems, difficulties, a standstill in your affairs. Perhaps you have lost control over the situation. Your approach to matters is outdated. It’s time to update something in your life.
A dirty car. Problems in your affairs, possibly reputational. Someone may be spreading rumors about you. Your affairs are not in the best state.
A clean, shiny car. Success, well-being, a good reputation. Your affairs are going well. Those around you respect you and your achievements.
Buying a car. If it’s new and beautiful – well-deserved profit, prosperity, well-being. If it has defects – financial difficulties.
A broken car. Stress, illnesses, failures. If the body part is damaged – a deterioration in your affairs, problems at work. If someone breaks your car – that person will cause you a great deal of trouble, intentionally or through carelessness.
Theft, hijacking, loss of a car. Someone will deliberately interfere in your life with the goal of taking possession of your achievements of a certain kind. This may concern personal property, financial and business interests. Moreover, there is someone ready to cross the line. So be vigilant about your surroundings and don’t lose sight of everything that is dear and important to you.
Being given a car. If it’s beautiful and expensive – circumstances beyond your control will work out in your favor so much that you will be able to change your usual standard of living for the better. If it’s plain or has defects – someone will give you whatever help they can in resolving life’s problems.
Washing a car. Putting in order affairs that you have actually neglected.
A burning car. It may be dreamed of in connection with an illness, and a rapid one at that. Be attentive to your health.
The color of the car in a dream
The color of the car in a dream is an important additional symbol that clarifies the interpretation.
A red car. If in a dream you see a red car, but in reality it is not that color – a sign warning against rash actions. A beautiful new luxurious red car may mean passion in relation to (anything whatsoever). A red sports car – a risk, as a result of which you will receive a huge income, a reward, a win. A red non-passenger car – danger from overload, both physical and emotional.
A white car. If it’s new and beautiful, expensive – great luck awaits you soon. This may concern a new venture, project, business, even a relationship – everything will bring income and even fame, especially if the car is new. If something is wrong with the white car – stress, blows, bad changes, debts, scandals, proceedings.
A black car. If it’s new and beautiful – a very high level of status in society, as a rule connected with public achievements. These could be: a position, a high level of earnings, a certain degree of fame in some field. A black car that is damaged or has defects – illnesses, difficult circumstances that cannot be changed due to objective reasons. If such a car is badly damaged, it may also mean death.
Driving a car: different scenarios
Driving on a smooth, good road. The most favorable scenario. Your affairs are going excellently. There are no obstacles. Good luck and success await you.
Driving on a bumpy, broken road. Difficulties and obstacles. You will have to overcome hardships. Be prepared for the journey to be difficult.
Driving uphill. Achievements, success that requires effort. You are moving toward your goal, but it requires work and perseverance. The reward will be worth the effort expended.
Driving downhill. Loss of control, decline, possibly failure. You may lose what you have already achieved. Be careful.
Driving in reverse. A return to the past, an attempt to correct mistakes. Sometimes — a change of position, “putting it in reverse.” Perhaps you want to return to something that has already passed.
Driving at high speed. Events will develop quickly. Be prepared for changes. You do not have time to stop and think.
Driving slowly. Stagnation, delay. Perhaps you are afraid to make decisions. Time is passing, and you are still standing in place.
Standing in a traffic jam. Obstacles, delays. Your plans may be postponed. You will have to wait. The dream suggests that something is hindering your forward movement.
Losing control. Loss of control over the situation. Something is not going according to your plan. You are not coping with the circumstances.
Breaking down. A halt in affairs. Perhaps you need to reconsider your plans. Something has gone wrong, and you need time to fix the situation.
Taking a wrong turn. You have chosen the wrong direction. Perhaps you made a mistake in making a decision. You will have to turn back and look for the right path.
Getting lost. You do not know where to go. You have lost your bearings. The dream suggests that you are uncertain about your future.
A car accident in a dream
A car accident in a dream — the collapse of plans, unexpected obstacles. It matters who was driving and how it all ended.
If you were driving and got into an accident. You are responsible for what happened. Perhaps you made a wrong decision. You took too many risks or were not attentive.
If you were a passenger. You will suffer because of the actions of other people. You trusted someone, and that person let you down.
If you survived. You will be able to overcome difficulties. You have the strength and resources to cope with the consequences.
If someone was hurt. Events will affect other people. Perhaps your problems will be reflected on those close to you.
If you watched the accident from the sidelines. You will witness other people’s problems. Someone else will face difficulties.
If the accident was fatal. Serious, irreversible consequences. Relationships, affairs, or plans will be completely destroyed. Be extremely careful.
If the accident was minor, without serious damage. The problems will be insignificant. You will quickly deal with them.
A car in critical situations
If in a dream someone tries to run you over with a car, chases you, or hits you. There is an enemy in life who will try to intentionally harm you. Most often, dreams specifically involving a car chase point to envious people (this is precisely why they act against you — they “run you over”).
By the car you can judge a person’s status. If an expensive car was chasing you, then the enemy will be a person of authority, not a simple person. If the car was plainer — then it is someone “simple.” If the car is familiar to you, you will figure out for yourself where “the wind is blowing from.”
If in a dream the car ended up in water. The dream means that a halt in affairs, some kind of obstacles will throw you off track so much that you will not be able to move forward or attend to your affairs. The synthesis of the symbols “car and water” signifies stagnation in affairs due to emotional depression.
Accidents, car crashes with relatives. They signify a crisis in their affairs, sometimes their illnesses. In such dreams you need to analyze additional symbols, and they will definitely be there: what exactly the car was like in the dream, under what circumstances the accident occurred, and what followed it. Car crashes with accidents may not signify real accidents on the roads.
A separate characteristic in such dreams is given to scenes with accidents where children are present. If in a dream a car hit a child, most often this means conflicts between parents.
The car door. They show how you allow other people to share life with you. For example, the passenger door points to the people you allow to be with you in a certain situation.
License plates. Most often they designate a date or a period.

A Dream About a Car That Came True: A KAMAZ Truck and a Man’s Pressure
This is just one example out of thousands. The world’s largest database of dreams that came true is collected in our app. There you will find stories that will confirm or refute your guesses.
A participant’s story:
I’m crossing the road, everything is fine, warm, bright, no cars. In the last few meters, a KAMAZ truck suddenly appears. It’s racing at enormous speed. I manage to step onto the sidewalk, it rushes past, but the whirlwind lifts me into the air. I don’t fall, then I land calmly. It becomes hot and I don’t know where I live.
In reality, I was under pressure from a man, and it happened quite unexpectedly. The situation was brought to a limit. There were also changes in the relationship, the hot air was the aftermath of a quarrel, the time spent in the air was the uncertainty of my position and instability.
It’s unclear whether I’ll fall face down on the asphalt or not. I landed on my feet. Everything is fine. But for some time, the confusion about what was happening still lingered.
This dream is a classic example of how a car shows pressure and change. A KAMAZ truck is a man’s pressure. A whirlwind in the air is the uncertainty of one’s position. Landing on your feet means everything turned out fine.

-
Recall who was driving: you, an acquaintance, a stranger.
-
Assess the road and speed: smooth or bumpy, fast or slow.

Good day! How can I explain a fragment of a dream? In an unfamiliar courtyard there’s a car, on the surface light and simple, small, I don’t remember a driver’s door on it. It seems my father and I are getting ready to go somewhere. I don’t know exactly the direction, or how urgently we need to go, and in general why we need to go anywhere. I come closer to the car. Father is sitting and fixing the steering wheel. It has peeled off, I see the foam rubber, and father is attaching it with clear tape. I ask: “What happened, what are you doing?” And he answers: “Well, I’m repairing it, we have to go, so that we can somehow get there.” I’m surprised, I step away. In reality, in my car, it’s light and small, there are defects in the upholstery on the steering wheel. They don’t bother me, well maybe from an aesthetic point of view, there haven’t been any thoughts of doing something about it yet. What is this dream about? I’d be grateful if you could tell me.

Good afternoon! How can one interpret such a dream: I am sitting in my boss’s car, next to the driver’s seat, she has gone off somewhere, I remained sitting, the car started moving on its own, at first I got scared, but then I realized that I was controlling it with the power of my mind, and at my wish it stopped by itself, I thought to myself that later when the boss returns, I would tell her where the car is.
Elena, hello, I think you will have to temporarily fill in for her at work or do part of her work, you will succeed well.
And post dreams in the Blogs, in the dream dictionary specific symbols are discussed, in detail it is more convenient in the Blogs.
Thank you.
No preferences, I was just sitting in the car trying to figure out what brand it was. In life, I don’t even “suffer” from this – I get in and drive. But today I was looking, thinking, and then bam – the brand logo right before my eyes – that’s why I got interested 🙂
Thanks 🙂
Victoria, out of curiosity, does the car brand have any symbolism? Or is color, old/new, cheap/expensive more important?
I started paying attention to brands in my dreams – today I was sitting in a black Ferrari as a passenger, even though I was getting into a blue one (from the side I couldn’t tell what brand it was). A few days ago I was a passenger in a red Mazda 3, and in the summer I drove a gray Jaguar XE myself, even though I don’t even have a license.
If there are personal preferences or specific memories with a particular model. + one must also consider public opinion regarding the car class – as a status symbol.
Hello! I dreamed that I was alone in the car (my husband had just gotten out), it’s dark outside with streetlights, like an autumn evening, a road, many cars, like a traffic jam or a traffic light, but not critical… I’m in the back seat of our car, and suddenly the car started moving without a driver… I realize that maybe something’s wrong with the brake… and I try to climb over to the front seat to put on the brake… but the front seats seem to close up in front of me and won’t let me through (I even realize that the car isn’t letting me),,, But I somehow manage to reach the handbrake and pull it… I remember this moment very well, that I’m pulling the handbrake… and I think that the car will keep going anyway… and then with an effort of will I start stopping the car… it seemed to work… and then I think… this is a dream after all. I’m just seeing a dream… and mentally I tell myself… WAKE UP… and I somehow moved around to wake myself up… and I woke up… this is already the third dream… where I realize that I’m sleeping and then tell myself to wake up… The first time I was in shock… it was scary to realize myself, to feel that you’re sleeping within a dream and you had to strain very hard to wake up… now I wake up quickly…)))
Very good training for lucid dreaming, when you were able to control the situation in order to avoid a bad ending.
Good afternoon. During the day, in a dream, I was driving my car up to an intersection and stopped at a traffic light, then I found myself in the back seat examining the car’s interior, happy that it was very spacious. At that moment the green light came on, the windshield turned out to be covered by black curtains, and the car started moving on its own. I tried to steer through the driver’s seat by intuition, without seeing the road. Then I tried to stick my head out through the sunroof but couldn’t, it was very small. I realized that I needed to move to the front seat and urgently stop the car, since the road wasn’t visible, but it didn’t work right away. It was scary, but I held the fear and steered. There were no collisions, and it seemed like I was starting to manage to climb over into the driver’s seat, and I woke up. Help me understand.
Victoria, it shows on the site that there is your comment, but I don’t see it here (((
