On the night of January 18 to 19, the participant had a dream.

Something like a beach. I went in to swim. I didn’t swim far. Nearby was Aunt Raya, on her own legs, though in reality she’s been paralyzed for several years. True, before that we sat next to each other and talked, she said that yes, she’s walking again, only her arm has become paralyzed.

In the water with me stand women — relatives, and all much younger than they should be. I can’t recall all of them, I just know that it’s them. Vita and Aunt Raya definitely went into the water, and someone very young, maybe Svetka, Vita’s daughter. She swam far. At first I followed her, then turned back, because I felt the depth and didn’t want to take risks — I swim poorly.

Outside it didn’t feel like summer. But there were plenty of people swimming. And the water was somehow yellowish, peculiar, as if sand had been stirred into it. And I started to get cold, like happens when you stay in the water too long.

Then I started getting dressed, the girls hurried me, I forgot my scarf and hat. I tell them, and they’re displeased, they don’t want to linger. These are no longer relatives, but friends, or something. I think: oh well, I have more at home. But I hope I don’t get sick. And then the scarf turns out to be in my hands, I put it on. It’s not winter. More like the in-between season. Spring.

I approach the house. The fence is low, still the one from childhood. Similar. Only wide, and on it lie many books. And lots and lots and lots of uncollected mail in the mailbox and beside it: newspapers, magazines, letters, parcels. Envelopes of various sizes.

One very large one, addressed to me, from Ukraine. From some Yuri with gratitude for some work. And the books, I understand in the dream, are old, I looked at them there, published in the 1970s. Mom put them out as unnecessary, let anyone who needs them take them.

I enter the house. A feeling of childhood. My parents are bustling about and laughing in the living room, also young. I announce loudly that I have arrived. I go to my room with a pile of letters, curious to look at them. And then I realize that the furniture is mirrored from how it should be.

I go to the living room and start probing, they don’t quite understand me because they see everything as it should be. I realize something is wrong because I see everything in a mirror reflection. Then I returned to the room and sorted through things that mom had prepared for throwing away. There was something interesting, clearly from my parents’ youth. Some rubber baby dolls in the form of a woman and a man that you could mold together however you wanted.

The participant was shocked by the unusualness of the dream. She understood that it was not for nothing that she dreamed of swimming on Epiphany. But she experienced real shock after she told her mother about the dream. And mom said that it seems in the Jordan they swam in her dream, the water there is exactly like that.

Until that moment, the participant had been troubled by the color and consistency of the water. But after mom’s words, she went online and saw that very water. Only in the dream the river was wide, the other bank was not visible.

In conclusion, she said that she is not a devout person. To put it briefly about her attitude toward God, she believes that God is inside a person, and religion is merely a crutch, but some people need it, so let it be. And it seemed very strange that such a dream came to her of all people, since she does not attach particular significance to church dates.

A dream with a sorcerer and an ex. A participant’s story

Another participant shared a lucid dream in which she tried to cast out a curse.

She became lucid during the dream, left her former home and flew up to the stars. The stars were clear, bright. On the way to them, a cloud in the shape of a devil’s face with a smile and vampiric fangs stood in her way. She tried to fly around it, but couldn’t.

She landed and wanted to try again. Her mother grabbed her by the leg and begged her not to do it. She remembered that leaving the house in a dream is a bad projection, and she went back.

With words of prayer, she entered her parents’ bedroom to banish the caster of curses. In the bedroom, on the bed, an unfamiliar man lay half-reclining. The shirt was familiar — the same as her ex’s. Dirty underwear, dirty clothes, all crumpled and sick. At the head of the bed sat a Black man — a voodoo sorcerer, a priest.

She began to read the prayer “The Dream of the Mother of God,” but forgot the words. The man looked questioningly at the priest, and the priest reassured him — she would not harm them. She understood that the man was bedridden, would soon die, and the sorcerer was helping him die properly.

She tried again to read the prayer — again she forgot. She went numb and couldn’t utter a word. She recognized the situation — this had happened before. At that, she woke up.

In prayer, she asked to be freed from curses and to remove her ex from her life. She understood that the lucid dream showed the fulfillment of the request — she should not interfere; the ex would soon leave her life on his own. Now she dreams of dreams where he gives her houses, cups, phones — the final settlement is underway.

The voodoo priest is either protection of the ex from negative influence, or a symbol of the influence itself upon him. The sorcerer did not threaten her; he was attending to the ex. The dirty underwear and clothes had already been dreamed before — the smell of a dead man, blood in the bathroom. She has not yet understood what these symbols mean.
