Part of the rules…
After yesterday’s events, which had not yet had any consequences, his perception of the world changed radically. There was no other way.
Completely absorbed in the state of this new existence, Alexey did not seriously ask himself whether he accepted the “hidden rules.”
Of course, he remembered that he had to decide for himself whether he agreed to the “pig in a poke” or not, but the feeling of giving up such a chance – did not even arise.
He was ready for even more than this conditional uncertainty.
Why?
Because life is such that when you sign a contract with harsh, sometimes absurd conditions that the “parties” take upon themselves, after ten pages covered in fine print, there is one small clause – “force majeure circumstances.” And even if you were promised honey with chocolate, and you insured yourself in the most unimaginable way, for some ridiculous and strange reason that very “force majeure” can take effect.
So what difference does it make? If, indeed, everything can change for him, and he won’t, finally, consider himself a loser.
Like the captain unknown to anyone with a Fury on the bow of his ship, he felt ready for anything “for” and “against.” He knew this even before the moment of meeting in the bar. He was ready for anything. The only thing that caused worry was the fact that he could cause pain or suffering to loved ones.
For the rest of the night, the blood pulsing in his temples wouldn’t let him sleep. And only toward morning did Alexei close his eyes and see a dream.
In the dream, he walked along a rocky road, completely alone. Patchy vegetation here and there created the illusion of field grass.
He walked for a long time and finally saw ahead that the road ended at huge gates – double doors with a tall opening. And these gates were, after all, neither here nor there. They just stood on the road by themselves, and that was that.
But as soon as he approached them, the gates swung wide open, and Lyoshka saw before him a sun-flooded valley.
He lowered his eyes and saw the threshold of the gates, resembling a high step.
Beyond that, the road continued on just the same and led to a river in the riverbed of the valley. But the road itself was sandy-golden and even. Sparrows were floundering in the sand, kicking up dust with their tails and chirping restlessly. Some, as if teasing, flew almost to the very threshold, shrieking with all their might, and flew back, but never flew through the gates to Alexei’s side. As if they were afraid of ending up on the “wrong” side.
Alexei turned around, took one last look at the dreary gray steppe, the gray gloomy clouds, and stepped across the threshold.
The next moment, a gust of wind hit him, along with splashes of river water and the deafening horn of a steamship. The “Enchantress” was sailing along the river, and on the upper deck stood a girl in a light dress desperately waving to him. Lyoshka choked on such a “gust” and woke up.
For the rest of the day, he kept looking at his watch. As always happens, time dragged slowly.
Finally, the clock struck seven, and Alexei flew out the door like a bullet. An hour and a half on the road – exactly as much time as needed to get to the address indicated on the business card.
At a quarter to nine, shifting from one foot to the other, he looked at the door of the apartment. Massive and solid, it resembled more the gates of a fortress than an apartment door.
Glancing at his watch once more, Alexei decided to wait for the appointed time and settled on the steps.
It was quiet in the entrance hall. Not even sounds from the other apartments could be heard. Only pigeons, flitting from place to place, tried to settle down for the night on the huge windowsills of the entrance hall windows and broke the silence.
Lyoshka didn’t want to think or reason about anything anymore. Like a child, he watched the second hand, counting every minute.
Exactly at nine, footsteps and the sound of a lock turning were heard. That very door opened. Lyoshka jumped up and stared at a towering, thin man who appeared in the doorway.
– Are you Alexei? – said the giant.
– Yes.
– You were asked to be given this.
The giant handed Lyoshka a dark green nephrite box shaped like an elephant.
– Take it. This is for you. Everything is inside. Anres will contact you soon.
The door slammed shut. The footsteps inside the apartment quickly faded.
– Everything inside. Anres will contact…, – Alexei repeated. He held the box and couldn’t believe his eyes.
– But how will he contact me? I didn’t even give him my phone number?
He started to raise his hand to the doorbell but changed his mind, scribbled his mobile number on a small notepad sheet, and wedged it into the door crack.
How he went downstairs, left the entrance hall, and got behind the wheel of his car, Lyoshka would never have remembered for anything. The pleasant summer evening descended lower and lower over the city. The wind blew through the open side window – it was him.
There was no bustle on the streets of the neighborhood. There were few people and little traffic. Somehow, strangely, everything around was calm.
At the next intersection, right in the middle of the road junction, stood a tram.
– Stuck, you horned thing, – Alexei muttered under his breath and began to drive around it at low speed.
At that very moment, something fell onto the roof of the car from above, and sparks showered down from all sides. The sound of electric discharges was the last thing the bewildered Lyoshka ever heard.
