This question concerns many people, including me. How among all the sugars known to us to choose the right one and, if not the healthy one, then at least the safe one.
Who doesn’t love to eat something sweet? Such a person can be met very rarely. For example, I know only one — my husband, who is absolutely indifferent to desserts! And sometimes I envy him, I wish I would never crave sweets either.
They say that the craving for sweets manifests in us from childhood, as if mother’s milk tastes sweet, and moreover our tongue is full of receptors responsible for the sweet taste.
But if you look — our body doesn’t need desserts, it was adapted to digest and absorb a small amount of sugar from natural sources — fruits, honey, maple syrup, stevia leaves. People’s consumption of desserts, which have become almost an integral part of every day, has led us, as humanity, to an increased risk of developing cancer, diabetes, obesity and other serious chronic diseases.
I personally perceive sugar as a drug that you constantly crave and that is very hard to “kick”! In principle, just like gluten. Have you ever thought about what you mostly always crave? Something sweet and some kind of pastry!
For myself, I searched for a very long time for the healthiest or at least not so harmful sugar, with which I could sometimes make desserts, add to tea (my husband drinks Indian tea, which in theory is always very heavily sweetened!), and also sometimes to treat myself.
In this post I will give examples of the most common (and not so common) sugars and explain what and why I sweeten my food with, and what I don’t go anywhere near even within a kilometer.
The healthiest Sugar — which one is it?
In order to make this important decision, let’s first look at the sweeteners known to us:
Brown sugar
Many people think that this sugar is much healthier than regular white sugar, but they are mistaken. The thing is that the process of producing brown sugar is identical to white, except only that at the end a small amount of sugar molasses is added to it, which gives the final product its brown color.
My opinion: there is no point in overpaying for brown sugar if it does not differ in all its characteristics from its harmful white brother.
Raw, unprocessed sugar
That is, sugar that has not been refined as much. And it may even contain vitamins and minerals. But does that really matter for our body? It does not know the difference between raw and white refined sugar, and even sugar full of vitamins and minerals also raises blood sugar levels!
My opinion: do not waste money, this sugar ultimately is no different from plain and cheap white sugar.
Honey
Here, it depends, of course, on which kind. If, for example, it is ordinary store-bought, processed, then immediately — no. It is the same ordinary sugar.
If we are talking about real, raw, unpasteurized honey — then it contains vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, amino acids. But again, all of this evaporates when honey is heated (forget about cooking with it or replacing sugar with it in tea). By the way, 1 tablespoon of honey contains about 20 grams of fructose, while for our health we need to consume no more than 25 grams of fructose per day.
My opinion: I am in favor of real honey, especially Manuka, but only for consumption in its natural, unprepared form and in small quantities. I eat 1 teaspoon of honey a day to get all its beneficial properties, and not as a dessert. I can recommend this raw honey or this Manuka. Your discount
Maple syrup
Produced from… surprise! Maple. It comes in different types and colors. The healthiest is dark, category B. By the way, maple syrup contains less fructose (which we try to avoid) even compared to honey. It’s perfect for making desserts.
My opinion: maple syrup — one of my favorite sweeteners for desserts!
Fructose
One of the most terrible and dangerous sweeteners! A toxin. In detail why fructose in fruits does not have a negative effect on us, while simple fructose turns into and is stored as fat, especially in the fat area, which increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, leads to insulin resistance, increased blood sugar levels, high blood pressure (did you think it was salt? no, in almost all health problems sugar should be blamed!), diabetes, liver diseases, arthritis, cancer and so on, I already wrote about it here.
My opinion: fructose is even worse than regular white sugar, which consists of it by 50%. I avoid it like the plague and don’t “fall for” the propaganda that supposedly, because it is contained in fruits, this makes it healthy. It is for this reason that I do not consume and do not recommend agave syrup — a newfangled phenomenon. It consists of almost 90% fructose.
Aspartame
A synthetic sweetener. In our television it is metabolized into wood alcohol (poison) and formaldehyde, which our body is unable to eliminate and gradually accumulates in cells and tissues, with all the resulting consequences.
My opinion: I won’t even waste time — NO! I just advise you to read my post on the topic of synthetic sweeteners.
Stevia
Or a natural sweetener that has almost no calories. It is obtained from the leaves of the plant of the same name. It does not raise blood sugar levels and is 100 times sweeter than it. It has been used as a sugar substitute for more than one millennium in Latin America.
My opinion: I am a fan of stevia. It is what I add to my husband’s tea instead of sugar, and I also bake and make desserts with it. Stevia, by the way, is Dr. Mercola’s favorite sugar, and that says a lot! I also learned how to make homemade Stevia extract.

Xylitol and other plant-based sugar alcohols
Not as sweet as regular sugar, but they contain slightly fewer calories, since they are not able to be fully absorbed by our body. Xylitol will not raise blood sugar levels much, unlike, for example, Maltitol. You should not indulge in them excessively — it will all end in bloating and diarrhea.
My opinion: a fairly good sugar substitute option, but again not cheap and with side effects when consumed excessively.
Glucose
Yes, simple and cheap glucose! Unlike fructose, it does not need the liver for processing and is not stored as fat reserves, but instead immediately goes toward the energy synthesis we need!
My opinion: a good option, but again in small quantities.

Coconut sugar
Very often I have been getting questions about this type of sugar. What if it seems like everything coconut is healthy, so sugar made from it should also be better than others. Yes, coconut sugar contains fiber and minerals, but in the end, it is metabolized absolutely the same as regular white sugar.
My opinion: why spend extra money if the effect of this, albeit coconut, sugar is the same as that of regular sugar?
At home I use Grade B maple syrup, unpasteurized natural organic honey, Manuka honey, stevia.
I hope that I was able to share my opinion about all the common types of sugar. But if I did miss something, don’t be shy and remind me. If I know, I will definitely share my opinion.
