Discoveries in a Dream

Why are discoveries made in a dream? The 19th-century American Elias Howe is considered the “father” of the modern sewing machine. He nearly went mad, straining his mind to figure out where the eye of the needle should be located for the mechanism to work. The solution came to the inventor in a dream. He kept thinking about the classic needle, and the eye at the bottom of the needle simply didn’t occur to him…

In the dream, the king of the savages gave Howe 24 hours to solve the task. The inventor was saved from the nightmare by the natives’ spears, which for some reason had holes in their tips, right at the point.

At 4 a.m., Howe woke up and turned the dream into reality. He understood everything at once. The eye of the needle should be at the point of the tip, not on the wide part. As a result, he was the first in the United States to receive a patent for a sewing machine with a shuttle mechanism (the so-called “lockstitch”).

Howe’s sewing machine made straight seams at a speed of up to 300 stitches per minute, and journalists called his device “extraordinary.” I wonder, if we still didn’t have sewing machines, would our world be the same? It’s even hard to imagine.
