What is Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome and how to deal with it?

What is Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome and how to deal with it?

What is Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome. What causes it, its symptoms and my personal experience fighting this serious condition that most people suffer from without even knowing it.

Yes, it turns out that everything in our body can get tired and “give out”, and the adrenal glands are no exception.

The first time I learned about this funny-sounding but very serious syndrome was a couple of years ago, trying to find an answer to why, despite proper complete nutrition, sufficient physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, I feel constantly tired, not in the mood and can’t sleep properly.

My investigation led me to these small but important endocrine glands, whose main function is to control stress levels.

Nowadays we are surrounded by stress: we worry about money, about the economic situation, we lose close and loved people, we get sick, we try to adapt to the modern frantic pace of life. And as a result, we overstrain our poor adrenal glands and they decide that it’s time for them to rest.

According to statistics, about 80% of people have suffered from this symptom at least once in their lives and, as always, in most cases, without even knowing it.

Just think and ask yourself, have you had a prolonged period of stress in your life, do you get irritated and nervous easily, maybe you have causeless depression, chronic fatigue, it’s very hard for you to fall asleep and you sleep poorly, you have low blood pressure and no matter what you do, you just can’t lose excess weight?

Then, most likely, you, like me a couple of years ago, have driven your adrenal glands “to the edge” and now, I will tell you, based on my own experience, how to give them a rest and bring them back to normal.

What is Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome (AFS)?

This is when our adrenal glands can no longer function properly.

The adrenal glands are small endocrine glands, no larger than a walnut, that sit on top of our kidneys as it were. They secrete more than 50 different hormones that perform essential functions in our body.

The outer part of the adrenal glands secretes Corticosteroid hormones, including Cortisol, whose numerous functions include controlling our metabolism, inflammation levels and blood pressure. Cortisol also prepares our body to “survive” in stressful situations.

The inner part of these glands secretes Adrenaline and Noradrenaline, the hormones responsible for our response to stress.

In modern medicine, Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome is not considered either a disease or even a separate syndrome. Therefore, in fact, no one will diagnose it for you or treat it.

What can trigger AFS?

  • The most important and primary cause is stress. Stress kills us far faster than any disease, and it is often what serves as the trigger for the development of one condition or another. And while a little stress only stimulates our body, chronic or prolonged stress causes it serious damage.
  • Diet. Excessive consumption of sugar and carbohydrates disrupts the normal function of Cortisol and certain Corticosteroids.
  • Chronic inflammation. One of the most common causes of which is the consumption of vegetable oils and refined products.

Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome

This syndrome is very easy to confuse with other conditions and diseases. Moreover, there is no specific test to make a diagnosis.

Below I have listed the symptoms that usually appear in people with fatigued adrenals. The symptoms of this syndrome are very easy to confuse with the symptoms of Hypothyroidism.

  • You can no longer handle stressful situations as easily as you used to. You try to avoid conflicts and emotional situations.
  • You sometimes find it difficult to concentrate.
  • You are irritated by the simplest little things.
  • Your immune system is weak and you get sick often.
  • You have stomach and/or duodenal ulcers.
  • You constantly feel tired, regardless of how long you slept. You already wake up tired.
  • You have low blood pressure with no apparent cause.
  • You often feel cold.
  • You suffer from frequent headaches and migraines.
  • You suffer from allergies.
  • You cannot lose weight, no matter how hard you try.
  • You have cravings for salty, sweet foods and caffeine.

Serious consequences of AFS for our health

As I always like to say, “hormones are no joke and usually they don’t end well.” And when the glands themselves are not functioning properly, then from there, like a snowball, one problem after another begins to accumulate.

Hormonal imbalance

When the adrenal glands get tired, they are no longer able to control the stress hormone — Cortisol in the blood, and its level remains high. This prevents the removal of excess Estrogen from our body. Estrogen, in turn, increases the amount of a special thyroid globulin, to which the hormones secreted by the thyroid gland attach.

When thyroid hormones are attached to this globulin, they are in an inactive form, as a result of which our body cannot use them and their level in the blood significantly decreases. This is precisely why Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome is symptomatically very similar to Hypothyroidism.

Weak immunity

Tired adrenal glands weaken the immune system and its proper functioning. There is a weakening of the defense mechanisms, such as, for example, in our intestines. The barrier preventing food particles from passing through the intestinal walls into the blood becomes weakened, and one of the main causes of all allergies and autoimmune diseases develops — Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Disruption of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal coordination

This is a special network of responses that controls our reaction to stress and trauma, the maintenance of temperature, digestion, mood, libido and energy.

How to bring Tired Adrenal Glands back into shape?

I suffered from adrenal fatigue syndrome when I was going through a very difficult stressful period in my life, which ultimately changed my life for the better. But I paid for it, so to speak, with my adrenal glands.

Restoring the normal function of these glands must begin gradually, don’t change everything all at once in one day, don’t stress your body even more.

It’s been a year now since I stopped worrying over trifles and finally I can sleep normally and most importantly well. I no longer feel constantly tired and my mood is fairly stable.

Here’s what I did to let my poor adrenal glands breathe freely:

  • I stopped paying attention to irritants that used to cause negative emotions in me. I just thought to myself, will this really matter in 5 years, and almost always the answer was unequivocally “no”.
  • I started practicing yoga and special breathing pranayama. I also started practicing a special emotional freedom technique, which I found from Dr. Mercola. Believe me, this is a very easy and effective practice that, I believe, everyone should know about.
  • I stopped eating foods that burden the adrenal glands. These are sugar, simple carbohydrates, refined foods and vegetable oils.
  • I started eating every 3 hours in order to stabilize blood sugar levels and balance Cortisol levels. Breakfast should be no later than 30 minutes after you wake up. And before bed — a small snack consisting of fat, for example a spoonful of coconut or butter. Under no circumstances practice Intermittent Fasting with exhausted adrenal glands!
  • I started eating more healthy fat and protein. My diet was almost 80% of calories from these 2 main components.
  • I stopped denying myself salt. I salted as much as I liked. Of course, using natural pink Himalayan salt, not white table salt. The thing is, during stress our body excretes a large amount of salt, which is exactly why many people experience cravings for salty foods during stressful situations.
  • I stopped drinking 2 liters of liquid a day. I drank only when I felt thirsty. Yes, this absolutely contradicts all the dogmas about healthy eating, but there is science behind it. Excessive water consumption dilutes our electrolytes and salt in the blood, slows down metabolism and thyroid function. The easiest way to tell if you are not overdrinking is to look in the toilet at the color of your urine, it should not be transparent, but slightly yellow.
  • I seriously started “loading up” on one of the most important vitamins for the adrenal glands — Vitamin C, but not in the form of synthetic, non-absorbable ascorbic acid.
  • I started eating a large amount of offal, because of its high content of nutrients, especially Vitamin A. I got up to 3 times a week.
  • I started going to bed at the same time and sleeping no less than 8 hours a day. In complete darkness.
  • For a month I stopped doing cardio, so as not to stress my adrenal glands even further. I started walking more.
  • I started eating and drinking more fermented foods (sauerkraut, beet kvass, homemade kefir), to normalize beneficial bacteria and additional Vitamin C.
  • I started taking Magnesium and Magnesium oil, a mineral that is intensively flushed out during stress.
  • I started taking herbs that have a positive effect on the adrenal glands: licorice root, ginkgo biloba, ashwagandha, rhodiola and tulsi.
  • I increased my intake of Omega-3, in order to fight chronic inflammation.
  • And the most important and simple thing — I tried to look for the positive sides in everything, enjoy life and smile more often.

It took me more than half a year to bring my adrenal glands back to normal. So please don’t count on an instant result. Natural methods work much slower than medications, but they are aimed at the root of the problem and treat the cause itself, not just the symptoms. They have no side effects and don’t “kill” other organs and systems.

Try to stick to this lifestyle for at least a month and, as always, observe how your body reacts and feels. Have your symptoms improved, are you sleeping better and handling stress better, have you been able to start losing those hated and stubborn kilograms.

As with other invisible and undiagnosed conditions, Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome goes hand in hand with Insulin Resistance and Leptin Resistance. All these conditions can and should be corrected with the help of proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome is not a myth, but a very real pathological condition that occurs in almost everyone and prevents us from fully enjoying and rejoicing in life.

Take control into your own hands and give your poor adrenal glands a rest. They definitely deserve it.
