How to learn to remember dreams: simple rules and practices

Why don’t we remember dreams? Because we haven’t trained ourselves to pay attention to them. In fact, everyone dreams. Every night. But most people simply don’t remember them. The good news is that this can be fixed. Just a few rules, and you will begin not only to easily recall dreams, but also to get answers to your questions.

If you want to check your symbols, go to the dream interpretation app. It contains thousands of real examples from our project, a complete database of dreams that came true, and more than 7000 symbols with interpretations that are not publicly available.

Why we don’t remember dreams

First, the main reasons why we can’t recall our dreams.

Got up quickly after waking up. In this case, blood supply to the brain increased, and the brain’s wave activity finally shifted to the beta-wave phase. That’s it, you are in a waking state.

Even realizing that you had a dream, you deliberately don’t recall it, don’t think about it. This is how dreams are often blocked. People don’t want to think about them and gradually train themselves, forming an addiction to ignoring them. And they don’t remember. By the way, this habit takes root very easily in most people.

Woke up in the slow-wave sleep phase. In the delta-wave phase. When dreams don’t occur, the brain rests. This is the lowest level of brain wave activity. It doesn’t go lower than that. Zero activity doesn’t happen.

Taking medications that affect the blood vessels of the brain.

How to remember dreams

How to remember dreams and how to learn to recall them (restore them in memory)?

After waking up, don’t jump out of bed, don’t change position. Lie still with your eyes closed and recall the dream. The basis of a dream is vivid images and your sensations. It is by them that you need to “pull” the dream out of memory.

Start randomly listing words, phrases, and at the same time picture in your imagination what you are saying. Almost always, as if “by chance,” you will name an image or object that was in the dream, and after that you easily recall your dream. Interestingly, your subconscious mind in such a random chaotic list will itself “toss in” the right image.

Remember what you were thinking about yesterday and recently. And of course, if you worked with a dream affirmation, what was your request? In this way, the theme of the dream narrows the circle of possible images. The principle is that dreams are often answers to your own mental request. During sleep, a person continues to process the information that concerned them most during the day.

Keep a dream journal. The best way to develop a habit of mind is to concentrate on the plot of the dream. Down to the details. They often contain a lot of information that is necessary and useful for you. Put a small notebook next to the bed, or even better a phone with voice input for recording text, and leave a note. Then, when you are fully awake, you will easily recall the whole dream with the help of your own notes. For example, the Dream Journal App has voice input.

Interpret your dreams! They contain more useful, concise information than in everyday perception. In this way, you will establish a connection between consciousness and subconscious, and you will begin not only to easily recall dreams, but also to receive answers to any of your questions. Find a good dream dictionary (the best one is the dream dictionary of our project, since its characteristics of symbols were compiled based on analytics of dreams that came true).

The main rules for those who want to remember their dreams

Why can’t I remember a dream? What kind of dream practice can there be if the most basic thing – remembering what I dreamed there – is impossible? Just a few rules, and everything will be fine. As always, I will say that in our physical world everything works according to its own laws. To do things incorrectly and expect the desired result is, at the very least, strange.

The main rules for those who want to remember their dreams. Once again:

Don’t jump right out of bed when you wake up. If necessary, set the alarm 10-15 minutes earlier than you need to get up. When you assume a vertical position, the pressure throughout the body, and of course the brain’s blood circulation, is redistributed. Your attention involuntarily focuses on external objects, and it is much harder to remember a dream than when you are still lying down.

There is one simple but effective exercise. It is called “random words.” Simply intuitively say to yourself everything that comes to mind. As a rule, in the first or second dozen such random words there will be a symbol from the dream. And the dream will very easily surface in your memory.

Rules for good sleep

And for a stable, easy, and simple dream practice, the rules are as follows:

Do not eat for 6 hours before sleep.

Ban on alcohol and other substances that alter consciousness: smoking mixtures, non-herbal sedatives, medications for blood vessels. If your doctor prescribed them for you, the rule does not cancel taking them. But you should know that there will be interference with perception, and in your sleep you will more likely see the effect on your brain. The images in the dream will correspond. You should not rely on the information from such dreams.

Sleep time should be adequate. You need a long REM sleep phase. It occurs during the 3rd-4th cycle. First the body, the organism and its systems rest, and slow-wave (deep) sleep is long. And then after about 5 hours (depending on how tired you are), the slow-wave sleep phase becomes long and it is much easier to see and remember dreams.

For me, dreams are best remembered in the morning

When I am still in bed. Over many years I have “figured out” my algorithm for quickly recalling a dream. I don’t think my method is very different from the rules that apply to most dreamers. But perhaps everyone has their own nuances. For example, I often analyze a dream right within the dream. And I can immediately decide for myself that it was simply processing information about yesterday’s events or impressions. And not worry about that dream.

Also, because during the night I see 5-7 dreams, and sometimes (but this is rare) 10-14, I can dictate important moments using voice input in the App. I have checked this many times. If you don’t record a nighttime dream, at least with 2-3 phrases, it is unrealistic to remember it in the morning.

In the morning, while drinking my coffee, I once again analyze the night’s dreams in general terms. If there was something important for me and I understand that the dream is of interest to me, then I write it down in more detail in my dream diary in the app. With details. Often it is precisely the details of dreams that later turn out to be the most valuable. Where an event will happen, when, under what circumstances.

If I see that there is nothing special, nothing of value in terms of information, I simply calmly let those dreams go. And that is normal.

There are dreams when I recall certain details and then, over the course of an hour or two, decide whether or not to write them down for myself. Usually these are dreams about “yesterday,” but you don’t realize that right away. That is, yesterday you unconsciously, or rather subconsciously, “caught” an emotion, and today the subconscious produced it as a mental hint.

For example, yesterday someone said a phrase in your presence, you got upset, frightened, but the mind reacted in such a way that it doesn’t concern you. But the fright itself didn’t go anywhere from the subconscious. And the dream still relieved you of it. In general, over time I also stopped writing down such dreams. The main thing is to understand their principle and essence.

In practice, in life, dreams about future events are the valuable ones. And of course, if you needed an answer and you received it in a dream, the dream needs to be analyzed in detail. Understood.

Why we remember dreams

Which dreams do we remember best? Even people who believe they don’t see dreams still “see” dreams. There are two categories of dreams that will still “break through” the “I don’t remember,” “I don’t see,” and you will remember them! These are very frightening dreams and very beautiful dreams that literally took your breath away. Why? Because they contained your strong emotions. And for all people, this component of life is important. We perceive the entire world through emotions.

Our feelings are always directly connected to our thoughts. Most of human horrors in dreams are a reflection of fear of the future. Especially if they are recurring. Only 1-2 percent of “bad” dreams are prophetic. The statistics are available on the project. If you understand the nightmares that your subconscious generates, you will begin to understand the true story of the person you are.

What to do if you have nightmares

You will understand where you are actually striving, and you will clearly see the direct path to achieving your goals. This will provide you with a deep level of self-awareness. Because nightmares are fears. In such plots we see either what we are afraid of losing, or what we are afraid of not getting. And it is precisely when a person becomes aware of their fear that they easily open the path for themselves, getting rid of blocks.

People experience surprise when they realize how closely they are connected to their dreams. And that often all it takes is to bring determination into your life or change your point of view, and everything falls into place. The path opens. When you see dreams that take your breath away, that fill you with strength, it means one thing. The stories of your life have begun to meet the stories of your dreams, and in reality you are LIVING your dream. Have you ever thought about what your dreams are for you?

Why people don’t see dreams

Regarding why people don’t “see” dreams. In fact, they all see them. And every day. But they simply don’t remember them.

People don’t see dreams simply because they haven’t trained themselves to pay attention to them. They don’t consider them something important. Just hallucinations of the imagination and that’s it, overfatigue, etc. There are plenty of excuses. But rarely does anyone dig into analyzing the topic. Ready-made answers (and absolutely superficial ones) were long ago implanted into their brains since childhood.

But, as you correctly noted, at certain moments even they still remember them. And practice shows that these dreams are not simple, carrying a very important message. People remember them for a very long time, though they don’t understand why. It’s just that the scale of the upcoming event is so significant that the subconscious simply cannot ignore it. Why? Upcoming events will touch the emotions. And strongly. To some extent, such people are even better off.

They will see all significant events; less significant ones their brain will simply filter out. People who observe dreams and those who are indifferent to the topic have different perception filters. Conditionally speaking, those who practice dreams at a good level can sense almost any event that will touch their emotional background to even the slightest degree. While those who don’t engage in this practice will have rare dreams, but if they do dream, it’s unlikely to be over a trifle.

The only sad part is that only a handful of people will be able to understand them. Figuratively, this is very similar to driving a car at night on a highway at high speed. With low beam headlights. It seems like you can see the road, but what’s there far ahead is unknown. But if you turn on the high beam headlights, you start noticing road signs in advance, which, for example, warn that there’s a pothole or a sharp turn ahead, you need to slow down, go around. But these signs also need to be learned to read, don’t they? Without knowledge of traffic rules, they are useless.

What to do if you had a dream you want to remember

If you had a dream you want to remember, write it down. Immediately after waking up, write down all the details before they fade. Write down your sensations during the dream and after waking up.

Check the symbols in the app. Each symbol has its own meaning. Check all the details of your dream. Don’t search on the website, search in the app, there are over 7000 dream symbols and interpretations that are determined based on the analytics of thousands of dreams from the project that came true.

Keep a dream diary. This is the best way to develop the habit of your mind concentrating on the plot of the dream. Down to the details. They often contain a lot of information that is necessary and useful for you.

To choose the right time for lucid dreaming practices, use the Dream Calendar. And if you want to understand the logic of dreams more deeply, read the book “Prophetic Dreams and Lucid Dreaming”.

About the project

Our project is a research study about dreams that has been ongoing for many years. Over this time, the world’s largest database of fulfilled dreams has been collected. Thousands of participants share their stories, and based on these stories we compile interpretations of symbols.

Unlike ordinary dream dictionaries, which take meanings from encyclopedias, our dream dictionary is created based on the analysis of real dreams that came true. Every symbol has been tested in practice. If the same symbol coincided with the same events for different people, it is included in the database.

The app is a dreamers’ club with private access. Everything is collected there: the complete dream dictionary database (more than 7000 symbols), the world’s largest database of fulfilled dreams, practices for inducing informational dreams, diaries, decoding algorithms.

We don’t fortune-tell and we don’t predict. We work with data. Symbols, patterns, correlations. Dreams show what is already happening or will happen. And this can be verified. As we do on the project.
