Magnesium: the most important mineral in our body that most people don't know about

Magnesium: The Most Important Mineral in Our Body. Magnesium — an important and forgotten mineral, a deficiency of which can cause not only insomnia and depression, but also atherosclerosis and heart disease. Symptoms of Magnesium deficiency. And also, which forms of Magnesium are the most biologically active.

Until recently, I never thought that some simple mineral could be responsible for a huge number of the most important functions in our body. But, as they say, you learn from your mistakes.

There was a difficult period in my life when I was under constant stress for a long time. I was nervous and worried, absolutely unable to relax and, as they say, “let go.”

And one day something happened that remains one of the most frightening moments of my life: a panic attack.

Before, I had only read about it and always wondered how it could be that you can’t control your mind and your body? Now, having experienced it myself, I can say with confidence that you completely lose control over yourself.

I genuinely thought I was dying. I was shaking, I couldn’t breathe, my heart was pounding wildly, I didn’t understand what was happening around me, there was only one thought — my heart is going to stop right now and I will die.

Knowing that any consequence has a cause and, accordingly, a treatment, I decided to devote a lot of time to what could help me and prevent recurring panic attacks and relax not only my body, but also my mind, naturally, without the use of medications.

And I found what I was looking for.

It turned out that I had a Magnesium deficiency. Of this mineral, which participates in more than 300 different biochemical reactions in our body, which is difficult to obtain from food and which is washed out of the body hundreds of times faster when you are under stress, which leads to negative consequences like panic attacks, insomnia, cramps, etc.

Magnesium is the only mineral that I now take every day. And I can personally say that it was exactly what helped me sleep peacefully again, relax and live without the constant fear of panic attacks.

Magnesium has numerous properties and effects on our body. For this — this mineral deserves a whole detailed post on my blog!

What Is Magnesium?

Magnesium is the most commonly occurring mineral in our body. And it is not for nothing that it is considered one of the most important minerals.

Magnesium is necessary for the proper functioning of every cell in our body; it regulates metabolism, electrolyte balance, and the most important biochemical reactions.

Magnesium activates muscles and nerves, helps us synthesize energy, improves digestion, and is a precursor to neurotransmitters — Serotonin and Dopamine.

Magnesium and Calcium

In modern society, Calcium is considered the most important mineral, and it doesn’t matter what you have: osteoporosis or simply splitting nails. It is the first mineral that will be recommended to you.

But here’s the problem: people continue to suffer from osteoporosis, and their nails don’t even think about stopping splitting. And all because balance is very important in our body.

The same applies to Magnesium and Calcium, whose ideal ratio should be 1:1.

This is where the problems arise. Magnesium and a sufficient amount of it are very difficult to obtain from food, simply even because it is leached from the soil much more strongly than Calcium.

Many people take Calcium, thinking they are strengthening their bones and teeth, but in reality — they are simply shifting this balance toward Calcium. As a result, Calcium in our body becomes more abundant, and Magnesium much less.

Guess which organ in our body contains the most Magnesium? The answer will probably surprise you. The heart!

And this is only one of a hundred reasons to normalize the level of Magnesium in your body.

Causes and symptoms of Magnesium deficiency

Let me say right away: at the moment there is no test or analysis that can accurately measure the level of Magnesium in the blood.

This is explained by the fact that Magnesium is distributed throughout our body: one half is in the bones, the other half is in the tissues, organs and blood vessels, and only about 1% floats freely in the blood.

But scientists suggest that about 80% of the entire world’s population suffers from a Magnesium deficiency without even knowing it.

Here’s what causes Magnesium deficiency:

  • stress
  • alcohol
  • coffee
  • black tea
  • grains (Magnesium is leached out by binding to Phytic acid, I wrote about this in more detail here)
  • soy products
  • sugar
  • Calcium
  • medications

Symptoms indicating Magnesium deficiency:

  • headaches
  • migraines
  • a feeling of weakness and fatigue
  • cramps
  • abnormal heart rhythm
  • cravings for chocolate
  • insomnia or poor sleep
  • irritability
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • allergies
  • unpleasant body odor
  • constipation
  • tooth decay
  • kidney stones

What is Magnesium needed for?

  • For good, sound sleep. With a Magnesium deficiency, the hormone Melatonin, which is responsible for regulating sleep, does not perform its function properly, resulting in poor sleep or being unable to fall asleep for hours.
  • For strong bones and the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Magnesium is necessary for building bone tissue and also improves the absorption of Calcium.
  • For strong, well-developed muscles. Magnesium helps our body synthesize a special growth factor that influences the growth and development of muscle fibers.
  • For beautiful, healthy teeth. With a Magnesium deficiency, the balance of Phosphorus and Calcium is disrupted, which leads to problems not only with tooth enamel, but also to the development of tooth decay.
  • For relaxation and a good mood. Magnesium is involved in the synthesis of the hormone Serotonin, which is responsible for our mood. Also, Magnesium will relieve you of leg cramps.
  • For the prevention of atherosclerosis of blood vessels, which leads to stroke and/or heart attack.
  • For normal, stable blood pressure. Magnesium relaxes the walls of blood vessels, thereby combating hypertension.
  • For cleansing the body of toxins. Magnesium stimulates intestinal peristalsis, attracting water, which not only prevents constipation, but also naturally helps to relieve it.
  • For the normal function of enzymes, which are necessary for numerous chemical reactions. Without Magnesium, our body is unable to synthesize a single enzyme.
  • For maintaining a healthy alkaline environment (pH balance) of our body. Bad habits, poor nutrition and medications shift our body’s balance toward an acidic environment, which can provoke the development of many chronic diseases.
  • For asthma control. Magnesium relaxes the bronchial muscles and regulates breathing.
  • For preventing diabetes and controlling blood sugar.
  • For preventing toxicosis in pregnant women. It is precisely Magnesium deficiency that is associated with nausea and vomiting during the first months of pregnancy.
  • For preventing and treating stress, anxiety, panic attacks and depression.
  • For preventing the development of malignant tumors.

Where can you get Magnesium?

Unfortunately, we no longer have the same ability as our ancestors to get the necessary amount of Magnesium from food.

Over the past century, great changes have occurred in agriculture. The use of pesticides, fertilizers, and simply soil depletion have led to a sharp decrease in the amount of Magnesium in food products.

The largest amount of Magnesium is found in spinach, beans, nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds, as well as in tomatoes, buckwheat and dark chocolate.

Do you consume these products every day in sufficient quantities? I doubt it. Do you get nervous, drink tea, coffee, eat grains and sugar? Most likely, yes.

So it turns out that our body no longer receives a sufficient amount of Magnesium, and on top of that, it is constantly losing it.

To restore a normal level of Magnesium, it can be taken not only internally, but also externally.

Also, you will not find pure Magnesium; it is always bound to another substance.

Magnesium internally

On average, a person needs about 400 mg of Magnesium per day.

There are a large number of forms of Magnesium, but the most common, cheap, and useless one (absorbability less than 5%) is Magnesium Oxide. This is exactly the form you will most likely find in your vitamin complex. Taking it is pointless, it will simply go down the toilet.

One of the few biologically active forms available for absorption by our body is Magnesium Citrate. This is exactly the form of Magnesium, I take and recommend to everyone. It is called Natural Calm.

I dilute the powder in a glass of warm water and drink it right away or, if I am going somewhere, I pour it into my stainless steel bottle (why I don’t use plastic, I already wrote about it here) and take it with me.

Recently I started taking ionic Magnesium solution, which is obtained from the Salt Lake in Utah. Your discount

Magnesium on the outside

Epsom salt is Magnesium Sulfate, which has the ability to be absorbed through our skin. That is, by taking baths or foot baths with this salt — you guarantee yourself an extra dose of Magnesium. I wrote in more detail about Epsom salt here.

You can also make Magnesium Oil, which you simply need to apply to the skin.

Important: An excess of Magnesium intake provokes diarrhea. Therefore, start taking Magnesium gradually and listen to your body. If you have started having diarrhea — then this amount of Magnesium is too much for you and you need to reduce it.

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals present in our body and one that many people do not even suspect.

It regulates all the vital functions of our body and its deficiency can provoke numerous conditions that can easily be avoided by taking the right form of Magnesium and baths with Epsom salt.
