1 Beneficial properties of Coffee2 Harmful Properties of Coffee3 So is Coffee beneficial or harmful? Is Coffee beneficial or harmful…
How beneficial or harmful Coffee is. How to determine if you are exactly the type of person for whom this aromatic drink is contraindicated? And how to properly and without health risks should you enjoy this drink.
One of the eternal and difficult-to-answer questions of our century!
Reading medical journals, you can come across hundreds of various studies proving the numerous beneficial properties of Coffee.
In the world of natural wholesome nutrition, this stimulating drink is in the so-called “gray zone,” alongside dairy products, black tea, alcohol, and chocolate. That is, we know that these products are beneficial, BUT… We have to pay for this so-called benefit, and sometimes very dearly.
Dairy products occupy one of the first places in allergic reactions, black tea contains a large amount of a nervous system stimulant — caffeine, just like chocolate, and alcoholic beverages can cause intoxication and addiction.
So, how do things stand with Coffee? What does our body have to pay for our morning (and not only morning) craving? Can all people enjoy this drink without harm to health?
I myself don’t drink Coffee, simply because I don’t like it (although I really like its smell). But in my family there are people who seriously like to indulge in Coffee, and for me it became very important to gather all the available information in order to finally decide — is it worth drinking it?
Beneficial properties of Coffee
I will start, perhaps, with them, to show my unbiased attitude toward this drink.
Based on the studies I have read, Coffee has the following beneficial properties:
- Rich in a large number of various antioxidants, which helps us fight free radicals and consequently premature aging and chronic diseases.
- Temporarily improves our mood, stimulates thought processes, and enhances physical activity.
- Prevents the development of many serious chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and liver disease.
Impressive, isn’t it? It seems as if, by drinking coffee on a regular basis, we are helping our body fight the aging process and preventing the development of many diseases.
But, as I already mentioned, this aromatic beverage belongs to the “gray zone,” meaning that it also has negative aspects.
Harmful Properties of Coffee
- Contains Caffeine — a substance that stimulates our nervous system. It would seem, what’s bad about that, right? Nothing at all! Unless, of course, you are under stress or, for example, chronically sleep-deprived! Then Caffeine for you is like a time bomb. It stimulates your already exhausted adrenal glands (which suffer greatly during stress and sleep deprivation), as a result your blood pressure begins to rise. Adrenal fatigue syndrome is such a common phenomenon that it’s hard to even believe it. You get nervous, your adrenal glands get tired, you start feeling fatigued, and to overcome that feeling your hand reaches for the most common stimulant — Coffee! And then a vicious cycle begins: you drink coffee, which further overloads your poor adrenal glands, and you feel even more tired, and oops — coffee again!
- Important news for the female half of humanity — Caffeine has a drying effect on the cervical fluid necessary for fertilization. That is, if you drink coffee, you automatically reduce your chances of getting pregnant.
- Over time, your body develops a tolerance or habit to Coffee, just as it does to any other stimulant. You need an ever-increasing amount of this beverage to achieve the same effect. And if you suddenly give up Coffee, you enter a very unpleasant withdrawal phase. Your head hurts, you feel tired and irritable. All of this indicates that Coffee is addictive, which in principle is not good for us.
- Coffee is one of the most pesticide-heavy crops. If you do not drink organic Coffee, you are absorbing all those toxins that remained on the beans after pesticides were applied.
- Mold toxins growing on coffee beans increase the risk of developing cancer, kidney and brain diseases.
- In sensitive people, Caffeine can provoke nervousness and panic attacks.
- It reduces the absorption of Calcium and Iron and leaches Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc, and B and C vitamins from our body.
- It increases fluid loss from our body because Coffee is by nature a diuretic, which with regular consumption shifts the natural balance of electrolytes.
- It has the ability to irritate the inner lining of our intestines. And where do most diseases begin? Right, from it, our dear gut!
- It carries no nutritional value other than the antioxidants it contains.
- Few people drink pure Coffee; it is almost always supplemented with sugar and all sorts of fillers.
And what about Decaf Coffee?
In order to obtain Coffee that does not contain Caffeine (which is not entirely true), coffee beans are rinsed several times with chemicals, which, of course, is far from all-natural. Moreover, Coffee with 100% Caffeine content does not exist; some portion of unwashed Caffeine always remains.
So is Coffee beneficial or harmful?
And here we come to the most interesting point!
Yes, coffee undoubtedly has undeniable beneficial properties, BUT… Everything directly depends on HOW and HOW safely for yourself you can indulge in it.
The thing is that all people feel the effect of this stimulating drink differently: some can calmly drink a cup a day, while others can’t stop even at the 5th.
Also, coffee tolerance directly depends on your genes and on the state of your adrenal glands. If you are constantly nervous, easily excitable, overly emotional, constantly sleep-deprived, train hard (yes, it’s hard to believe, but this also greatly fatigues our adrenal glands), suffer from some chronic condition — then coffee will be a very bad idea for you.
Listen to your body, to how it feels.
If you wake up with the thought that coffee is the best thing humanity could have created, or you absolutely cannot get yourself up in the morning and coffee is the only thing that stimulates you — quit it! These are very serious signs indicating that your body does not perceive this drink properly.
But even for those who are absolutely or almost absolutely healthy — I urge you not to drink coffee every day.
The maximum you can do to feel all the beneficial properties of these beans is to drink one small cup (250 ml) 1-2 times a week. At the same time, without mixing in sugar or all sorts of additives. This way you will protect yourself from addiction and those harmful properties of coffee that come with it when consumed constantly.
And if you do drink coffee — choose a quality one, in beans, preferably organic, and brew it yourself at home.
Buying coffee in all sorts of coffee shops will affect not only your health, but also your figure! Read how many ingredients (far from natural) and calories are contained in all sorts of Cappuccinos and Lattes. Just don’t fall off your chair, sometimes such a cup can easily exceed 500 calories. Don’t drink empty calories!
I don’t have a coffee machine at home and we don’t drink coffee! But some other people close to me have a big problem with coffee abuse, which I constantly struggle with. I really hope that they, like you, after reading this post will start to consider this seemingly simple drink more seriously!
To everyone addicted to coffee, I advise gradually “getting off” it. Of course, it will take time, patience and a couple of bouts of headache, but in the end it’s worth it.
I believe that we should not consume what causes addiction and dependence in us, and coffee in its degree of addictiveness goes hand in hand with sugar and wheat.
So coffee is both beneficial and harmful at the same time!
Personally, in my eyes — it’s like a natural dessert, which seemingly consists of natural beneficial ingredients, but still it’s not advisable to indulge in it often.
Therefore, I urge you to listen to yourself and decide — whether coffee consumption is worth the health risks associated with it.
