1 Is there a difference in Milk?2 What about Milk allergy?3 So is Milk good or bad for you?4 My opinion about MilkAnother one of the “eternal questions” — is Milk good or bad for you. Is there a difference between Milk? Why do people suffer from milk intolerance and allergies. And my personal view on the problem of modern Milk.
As a child, my grandmother always made my little sister and me drink milk. At that time we lived in Ukraine and we had access to village fresh milk. Did I like milk? No! The smell, the consistency, and even the taste aroused in me absolutely no desire to drink it every day.
But my grandmother selflessly cooked porridge for us and warmed milk with honey in the evening. She grew up with the notion that Milk is beneficial and necessary not only for the growth and development of children, but also for the health of adults.
In India, milk is also very highly valued for its nutritional qualities. There you will not find a “milkless” family. Milk is drunk and consumed daily. For my Janu’s parents, for example, the milkman delivers milk to their home every day. And in India, if a mother does not have enough milk — she supplements her baby’s feeding not with synthetic formula, but with cow’s milk.
But more and more frightening news is appearing that Milk is not digested well by the human body, causes allergies, and is unsuitable for our nutrition.
So where is the actual truth? Should we drink Milk, as our grandmothers bequeathed to us, or should we give it up for the sake of our health?
Is there a difference in Milk?
Not all Milk, just like all products, is obtained in the same way. And this is where the answer to the very question lies: is it good for you or not. Let’s look with you at the form in which this drink comes to our table.
Fresh unpasteurized milk
What Milk did our ancestors drink? Fresh, “straight from the cow,” unpasteurized and certainly nothomogenized.
Such milk is very nutritious. It contains all the necessary and easily digestible proteins, fatty acids, micronutrients. From one glass of milk they got Vitamin D, B2, B12, B6, B1, K, K2, A, minerals Calcium, Phosphorus, Selenium, Zinc, Magnesium. One should not forget also about such important substances as Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Conjugated Linoleic Acid.
This Milk is rich in more than 60 digestive enzymes, growth factors and immunoglobulins. As I also call it — “living milk” is capable of improving digestion, ridding us of all sorts of allergies and is a good source of all necessary substances. The cows giving such milk grazed in the pasture, ate the “right” food for them — grass, they were not given antibiotics or hormones.
Store-bought pasteurized homogenized Milk
Most people only have access to this kind of milk. Although, this drink can’t even be called milk.
Pasteurization kills not only all the bacteria living in Milk, but also the digestive enzymes (Lactase, Galactase, Phosphatase) NECESSARY for its proper digestion. The particles of destroyed bacteria remain in the milk and, upon entering our body, trigger an immune reaction, which subsequently provokes allergic reactions.
During pasteurization, fats oxidize and proteins break down. The fat in homogenized milk spoils very quickly spoils. Such Milk contains almost no natural nutrients.
Synthetic Vitamin D is added to it, which, like most synthetic vitamins, is not absorbed by our body.
Cows that produce regular store-bought milk (if it is not organic) experience the effects of hormones for greater milk production and antibiotics to keep them half-alive, after absolutely lethal doses of hormonal drugs. This is absolutely inhumane! Moreover, such cows have no opportunity to graze in a pasture, but stand in stalls their entire short life.
One should also not forget about absolutely unnatural products like skimmed or low-fat Milk, which carries no nutritional value, except for poisoning our health.
Dry powdered Milk
This is the most terrible type of Milk that can be found.
During its processing, Cholesterol, which is naturally an antioxidant and protects us from diseases, oxidizes and turns into a monster — Oxidized Cholesterol, which is deposited on our blood vessels, with all the resulting consequences.
What about Milk allergy?
Yes, an increasing number of people cannot tolerate Milk. When consumed, it causes disorders of the digestive tract: constipation, diarrhea, gas, severe colic, nausea.
One of the main causes of intolerance to Milk is a deficiency of the digestive enzyme needed to digest it — Lactase.
Lactose is the main carbohydrate in Milk, or milk sugar. It consists of Glucose and Galactose. In childhood we have the ability to synthesize the enzyme Lactase to digest Lactose in large quantities, which allows us to tolerateMilk without problems, but with age this ability significantly decreases.
According to statistics, about 75% of the entire world population cannot synthesize enough Lactase and therefore suffers from all the symptoms of lactose deficiency. But, interestingly, such people usually do not have problems digesting butter and fermented products, such as yogurt and kefir.
The second type of allergy, which occurs when we drink pasteurized Milk, is much more serious. Pasteurized Milk triggers an immune response in our body and provokes a kind of autoimmune reaction. This may manifest as allergies, hormonal problems, increased intestinal permeability syndrome, which can lead to the development of autoimmune diseases.
So is Milk good or bad for you?
I think you can already answer this question yourself. It depends on what kind of Milk it is and on how easily your body can digest it.
Unpasteurized milk from pasture-raised cows is an ideal source of all beneficial substances that can strengthen your health. The commercial processed version is a bad idea for complete nutrition.
Evolutionarily, humans were not created to drink cow’s milk. But we have already been consuming Milk for thousands of years and our genes have changed, adapting to it. But even they are not capable of adapting to unnatural processed milk, leading to its rejection and health problems.
My opinion about Milk
Quite recently, having moved to another state, I found a farm where I now buy fresh milk. It is unpasteurized and unhomogenized. This Milk comes from pasture-raised cows.
Previously, I bought store-bought organic milk, because there simply was no other choice. But I used it only for fermenting homemade kefir. The thing is, I suspected that I suffered from Lactose Intolerance, and when I drank processed Milk afterward I suffered “with my stomach.”
After reading about how sometimes people who cannot tolerate store-bought milk feel completely differently when consuming fresh milk, I decided to experiment on myself and try drinking unpasteurized milk.
I drank it by the glass every day for a week. And I myself could not believe how calmly my digestive system reacted to it. I had no gas, no stomach pain, no other problems that I usually encountered when I drank pasteurized milk. So now I not only culture kefir from this milk, but also drink it just as it is or make smoothies with it.
Regarding the danger of unpasteurized milk. It is very important to know and trust where and from where You buy fresh milk. According to statistics, the risk of infection with some disease or salmonellosis from the milk of pasture-raised cows is negligibly minimal.
If You do not have the opportunity to purchase unpasteurized milk, then I recommend completely giving up drinking it. Fermenting it as before is possible, but for this try to buy organic and обязательно only full-fat.
If you start drinking raw high-quality milk, then always listen to your body, how it feels and behaves.
Also, if You suffer from autoimmune diseases or allergies, I advise You to give up milk, even if it is natural.
I would also like to note that Milk and dairy products stimulate the release of Insulin and a special Insulin factor, which may be accompanied by inflammatory phenomena on the skin. Therefore, if You suffer from acne, pimples and inflammations, giving up dairy products will be the first step on the path to beautiful and healthy skin.
Milk is in the so-called “gray zone,” meaning that people simply cannot figure out whether its beneficial properties are worth the negative factors that its consumption brings. The choice, of course, as always, remains with You. But if You nevertheless decide to drink milk — then choose natural and unprocessed and avoid store-bought and pasteurized milk.
