Deal with the Artifact: The Mystery of the Box and the Price of Choice

The most mystical part of the book is based on real events that happened to a person who gained access to the artifact. Whether it was a figment of imagination or a genuine intervention remains a mystery. But what happened afterward changed his life forever. The author preserved this story exactly as it was told, so that each reader could draw their own conclusion.

Section 2. Chapter 3

After yesterday’s events, which so far had no consequences, the perception of the world changed fundamentally. In no other way.

Completely absorbed by the state of this new existence, Alexey did not seriously ask himself whether he was accepting the “hidden rules.” Of course, he remembered that he needed to decide for himself—whether he agreed to a “pig in a poke” or not—but the feeling of refusing such a chance did not even arise. He was ready for even more than this conditional uncertainty.

Why?

Because life is such that when you sign a contract with harsh, sometimes absurd conditions that the “parties” assume, after ten pages riddled with fine print, there is one little clause—”force majeure circumstances.” And even if you were promised honey with chocolate, and you protected yourself in the most unthinkable way, for a ridiculous and strange reason that very “force majeure” may come into effect.

So what’s the difference? If, indeed, everything could change for him, and he would finally stop considering himself a loser. Like the captain unknown to anyone with the Fury at the bow of the ship, he felt he was ready for anything, for and against. He had known this even before the moment they met in the bar. He was ready for anything. The only thing that caused him worry was the fact that he might cause pain or suffering to those close to him.

The blood pulsing in his temples kept him from sleeping for the rest of the night. And only toward morning did Alexey close his eyes and see a dream.

In the dream he was walking along a stony road, completely alone. Patchy vegetation here and there created the illusion of field grass. He walked for a long time and finally saw ahead that the road ended at huge gates — double-leafed with a tall opening. And these gates were, after all, neither here nor there. They simply stood on the road by themselves, and that was that.

But as soon as he approached them, the gates swung wide open, and Leshka saw before him a valley flooded with sun. He lowered his eyes and saw the threshold of the gates, resembling a high step. Beyond it the road continued in the same way and led to a river in the valley’s channel. But the road itself was sandy-gold and even.

Sparrows were floundering in the sand, kicking up dust with their tails and chirping restlessly. Some, as if taunting, flew almost right up to the threshold itself, screeched with all their might, and flew back, but they never flew through the gates to Alexey’s side. As if they were afraid of ending up on the “wrong” side.

Alexey turned around, looked one last time at the dreary gray steppe, the gray gloomy clouds, and stepped across the threshold.

The next moment, a gust of wind hit him, splashes of river water, and the deafening blast of a steamship’s horn. The “Enchantress” was sailing down the river, and on the upper deck stood a girl in a light dress, desperately waving at him. Lyoshka choked on such a “gust” and woke up.

For the rest of the day, he kept looking at the clock. As always happens, time dragged on slowly. Finally, the clock struck seven, and Alexei flew out the door like a bullet. An hour and a half on the road – exactly how long it took to get to the address on the business card.

At a quarter to nine, shifting from foot to foot, he stared at the apartment door. Massive and sturdy, it looked more like a gate to a fortress than an apartment door. Glancing at his watch once more, Alexei decided to wait until the appointed time and settled on the steps.

It was quiet in the stairwell. Not even sounds came from the other apartments. Only pigeons flying from place to place, trying to settle for the night on the huge windowsills of the stairwell windows, disturbed the silence. Lyoshka did not want to think or reason about anything anymore. Like a child, he watched the second hand, counting every minute.

Exactly at nine, footsteps and the sound of turning locks were heard. That very door opened. Lyoshka jumped up and stared at the tall, thin man who appeared in the doorway.

— Are you Alexei? – said the giant.

— Yes.

— They asked me to give you this.

The giant handed Lyoshka a dark-green jade box in the shape of an elephant.

— Take it. It’s for you. Everything is inside. Anres will contact you soon.

The door slammed shut. The footsteps in the apartment quickly fell silent.

— Everything is inside. Anres will get in touch…, — Alexey repeated. He was holding the box and couldn’t believe his eyes.

— But how will he get in touch with me? I didn’t even give him my phone number?

He was about to raise his hand to the doorbell, but changed his mind, scribbled his cell number on a small notebook page and stuffed it into the door crack.

How he went downstairs, exited the building, and got behind the wheel of the car, Leshka wouldn’t have remembered for anything. A pleasant summer evening was descending lower and lower onto the city. Wind was blowing through the open side window — the same one. There was no bustle in the streets of the neighborhood. There were few people and vehicles. Somehow strangely calm everything was around.

At the next intersection, right in the middle of the road interchange, stood a tram.

— Stuck, horned one, — Alexey muttered under his breath, and started driving around it at a low speed.

At that very moment, something fell from above onto the car’s roof, and sparks showered from all sides. The sound of electrical discharges was the last thing that Leshka, who understood nothing, heard.

About the book and the project

The history of this book began with an archive of hypnosis sessions kept by a self-taught hypnotist back in the seventies of the last century. His records, preserved for more than twenty-five years, accidentally ended up with a certified therapist who uses progressive hypnosis in his work. The archive represented eight years of observations, at a time when such practices in our country were only just beginning to develop.

The archive came to the therapist through a young woman who discovered it in an inherited apartment. Attached to the records was an instruction that prescribed continuing the work that had been started. Over the course of four years, more than seventy sessions were conducted, during which the participants immersed themselves in their past lives and in the state between lives.

What was discovered in the course of these investigations turned out to be important for understanding the deep processes of life. With the permission of the heir, all the records were handed over to the author. It turned out that every step of a person is already predetermined, every decision matters, and everything that happens to us is one of many realities.

The author used the archival data to create a work of fiction, supplementing it with characters and plot devices. At the same time, the value of the original events described in the archive was fully preserved.

This book marked the beginning of the creation of a project for the study of dreams. Today it is an analytical platform based on thousands of participants’ dreams, their dreams that came true, and the stable connections between symbols and real events.
