1 What is Cholesterol?2 Cholesterol: harmful or not?3 How to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases? Is cholesterol harmful or not. What this substance actually is. Where the theory of cholesterol’s harm came from and whether it is true. And how to prevent diseases of the cardiovascular system.
Today I decided to debunk another myth of our nutrition. And it will concern, as you have already guessed — Cholesterol.
What do we hear from the news, magazines and even doctors? That this substance is the main and almost the only cause of heart attack and stroke. Elevated Cholesterol is automatically equated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and ultimately death.
I also believed all this and also tried to consume as few foods rich in this substance as possible.
But then, I read one very interesting and useful book about traditional nutrition and a question arose before me: why did our ancestors, who ate lard, meat, butter and whole dairy products, not know what heart and vascular diseases are? Did they have low Cholesterol in their blood, or is it not its fault in the development of these conditions? Should we limit ourselves in the consumption of foods with Cholesterol, as we are universally recommended to do everywhere? Or is that not where the problem lies?
And in order to answer these questions for myself, I dug through a heap of literature and research, and the final discovery simply astonished me. And exactly what conclusion I drew for myself I will tell you in this post. And I assure you that it will be a complete surprise for you!
What is Cholesterol?
Many people, and why hide it, I was among them too, perceive it as complete and unconditional evil. Few people really understand what exactly this substance is.
Cholesterol is a substance of a fatty nature, synthesized by our liver, and we can also get it from animal products.
It participates in a huge number of diverse and important functions: the structure of cell membranes, nerve cells, the brain, the synthesis of hormones and vitamin D, the metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K. In which organ is the most of this substance found? In the brain!
And cholesterol is also an antioxidant! That is, it not only does not kill us, it protects us from free radicals and chronic inflammation.
Officially, there are 2 types of Cholesterol:
- Low-Density Lipoprotein or “bad” Cholesterol — these molecules are very small and hard. They are the ones blamed for being deposited on the arteries in the form of cholesterol plaques, clogging them, leading to atherosclerosis.
- High-Density Lipoprotein or “good” Cholesterol — these molecules are large and fluffy. They are not deposited on our arteries and consequently do not clog them.
We are told that “bad” cholesterol is the risk of heart and artery diseases. But it turns out it’s not so simple.
Cholesterol: harmful or not?
How do we know that Cholesterol is enemy number 1?
It turns out that in 1953, scientist Ancel Keys conducted the so-called “Seven Countries Study,” claiming that fats from food lead to coronary heart disease.
Initially, 22 countries participated in the study, but they did not fit the “carbon copy” of what Keys specifically wanted to prove (somewhat reminiscent of the Chinese study, doesn’t it?). And in the end, only 7 countries were included in the final product. Later, this study was rechecked several times and not a single fact was found confirming the theory about the harm of healthy fats, including Saturated fats, and their connection to heart and vascular diseases.
For me, it was a big surprise to learn that, it turns out, countries with high consumption of healthy fat (I’m not talking about fast food) and Cholesterol — suffer the least from cardiovascular diseases. It turns out that people with low levels of this substance are at risk of brain diseases, dementia, and… heart disease itself. And that in 75% of people who suffered a heart attack, Cholesterol in the blood was normal!
Previously, before the propaganda of the anti-fat theory began and the appearance of vegetable oils, heart disease occurred only due to infections or immune problems. And now?
So what then leads to heart attack and stroke? Why do our arteries narrow? Why do these very cholesterol plaques form?
A new theory, which is very close to me, states that the problem is one — it’s chronic inflammation. It is precisely this that leads to damage of the vascular walls. After that, Cholesterol is sent to the site of damage by our body to repair these damages.
And everything would be fine, but sometimes this Cholesterol oxidizes and then it becomes truly deadly dangerous. Where does this super harmful substance come from?
From those products that are promoted to us as healthy and beneficial!! These are low-fat or reduced-fat dairy products, powdered milk, trans fats, and what almost every person on this planet currently consumes — vegetable oils (sunflower, corn, rapeseed, grapeseed, and so on). These oils can also be blamed for chronic inflammation. So it turns out that if you consume them on a regular basis — you are twice at risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Another cause of chronic inflammation is a high level of insulin in the blood, caused by the consumption of carbohydrates and sugar. Nowadays, almost everyone can be found to have Insulin resistance.
Cholesterol itself, in its normal non-oxidized form, is capable of ridding us of chronic inflammation, prevents the formation of blood clots, strengthens the immune system, and reduces the risk of mutations in cells.
How to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases?
How can you actually protect yourself from the #1 cause of death in our time? How, with the help of natural and wholesome nutrition and a truly healthy lifestyle, can you prolong the life of your heart and blood vessels?
- Give up vegetable oils, the main source of pro-inflammatory Omega-6 in our diet. I cook with coconut and butter. I dress salads with olive oil and consume red palm oil.
- Increase your consumption of anti-inflammatory Omega-3; the main and well-absorbed source is fish and fish oil. I try to eat more fish (wild, not farm-raised) and take these Omega-3s.
- Eat more Saturated fat. I again focus on coconut oil and milk, cow’s pasture-raised unpasteurized milk, butter, lard, eggs, liver.
- Reduce consumption of simple carbohydrates, grains and sugar to a minimum. I hardly eat grains, I replace wheat flour with coconut flour. Of sweets, I eat fruits, maple syrup, honey and stevia in moderation.
- Consume fermented and pickled products. This is needed to optimize the intestinal microflora, which is responsible not only for our body’s perception of chronic inflammation, but also for overall health and even appearance! I ferment cabbage myself, ferment beet kvass, kombucha and kefir. Minimum expense, enormous benefit!
- Bring your blood vitamin D level back to normal. It helps prevent the formation of arterial plaques. Most people do not live in the tropics (at least Russians) and it is very difficult for them to achieve a good vitamin D level. In summer I always try to be in the sun for at least half an hour without sunscreen; in the other months I take vitamin D3+K2, which I actually recommend to everyone.Your discount
- Exercise. It has already been scientifically proven that sports strengthen our health and prolong life. For myself, I have chosen high-intensity interval training, which not only keeps my body in shape, but also has a serious impact on my health — it multiplies the synthesis of growth hormone, which unfortunately decreases with age. I also practice yoga, which relaxes my brain and allows me to let go of all adversities.
- Sleep more soundly, longer, and in complete darkness. Lack of sleep and its poor quality affect both mood and well-being, not to mention health, including our cardiovascular system.
- Try to push stress aside. I know this is very difficult. But it is important to understand that worrying will not change the situation in any way, it will only harm our health! Let go of what you cannot control. Yoga, magnesium (I use homemade magnesium oil), and a relaxation technique that I found from Dr. Mercola help me with this.
I would also like to add a couple of words about the heavily advertised medications — statins or drugs that lower blood cholesterol levels. I am not a doctor and of course I cannot recommend not taking them if they have been prescribed to you. But at least take Coenzyme Q10 along with them, or an antioxidant that our body needs and that is important for us and that is washed out of our body at an enormous rate by statins.
And finally, I want to add on my own behalf that a new era is dawning in science and medicine, an era when old research is being superseded by new research proving that natural and complete nutrition and even the right fat! play almost the very first role in the development of chronic diseases and cancer.
I would rather eat a huge slice of real butter than a teaspoon of sunflower oil or, even worse, margarine. I consume unpasteurized dairy products and will never again look at the monsters invented by man — low-fat or fat-free milk, yogurts, sour cream, cottage cheese. I happily eat eggs with yolks, which contain a large amount of cholesterol. And, yes, I can easily eat a piece of pasture-raised or homemade lard too, without worrying that it will clog my arteries.
This is how our ancestors ate, and they did not die from diseases of the heart and blood vessels. But in our time of progress and technology — this is the number 1 cause of death throughout the world.
We should all think and reflect: cholesterol has always existed, but what about vegetable oils, trans fats, low-calorie products, and powdered milk? I think you can answer this question yourself.
