Why is salt beneficial and necessary for our body?

Why Is Salt Good for You and Essential for Our Body? I’m almost sure you don’t know that Salt is good for you and essential for our body! What beneficial properties it has. And which salt you should choose, and which you should avoid like the plague.

The popularity of low-salt eating and diets is gaining more and more popularity, on par with low-fat diets. Recently I published a post about the usefulness and necessity of fat for robust health and an ideal figure, and this pushed me to debunk another myth related to complete healthy nutrition.

Many people reduce the amount of salt in their food, listening to the same people who advise giving preference to synthetic fat-free products instead of their “fatty” versions and replacing natural butter with chemical vegetable oils.

These days salt is called the white death! But is that really so?

Did you know that we cannot live even a day without Salt? That it is vitally necessary for absolutely every physiological process in our body? That a lack, yes precisely a lack of Salt, can lead to very serious health consequences?

If you are still not salting enough or avoiding Salt — then read my post to the end! I will tell you how and why you not only can, but also need to eat as much Salt as you want!

Why Is Salt Good for Our Body?

For centuries, Salt in the literal sense of the word was valued at its weight in gold, and only the wealthy could afford it.

In our age of technology and discovery, Salt has come to be regarded as one of the causes of many chronic diseases, and we are urged to either give it up entirely or reduce it to a minimum.

For me, giving up salt has always seemed strange. Our tongue has “salty” receptors, and I believe that nature does not create anything without purpose. We need them to taste and enjoy food. Salty food!

I want to dot all the i’s right away. This post is about natural, real salt, and not about the synthetic analogue that, unfortunately, can be found in most households — white table salt. This product doesn’t even deserve to be called salt, since this salt is not found in nature; it is created by human hands.

Simple table salt goes through a chemical process of purification and bleaching, with the addition of such serious metals that damage our health as Aluminum, and it contains absolutely no beneficial substances. You might object that it contains iodine. Yes, but it is synthetic and is absolutely not absorbed by our body.

Real sea salt, or my favorite Himalayan salt, contains up to 80 different minerals, which ideally supports our natural electrolyte balance.

Here is what a lack of Salt in our diet can lead to:

  • hypertension
  • gallbladder problems
  • kidney stones
  • diabetes
  • asthma
  • cellulite
  • chronic fatigue
  • swelling
  • mineral imbalance

And now I want to tell you about something you will rarely read anywhere — the beneficial properties of natural Salt.

And there are a great many of them:

  • Contains the minerals we need: Magnesium, Phosphorus, Iron, Manganese, Copper, Zinc, etc.
  • Negatively charged Salt ions support normal chemical and hormonal reactions in our body.
  • Essential for the proper digestive process; increases gastric juice secretion, which helps combat heartburn and digestive problems.
  • Improves the absorption of nutrients from food by our body.
  • Cleanses our cells of toxins, again thanks to the negative charge of Salt particles.
  • Improves pH balance by providing an alkaline effect.
  • Stabilizes blood sugar, which is especially important for people suffering from Type 2 Diabetes. A lack of Salt can trigger a serious condition — Insulin resistance.
  • Supports the health of the musculoskeletal system. Our bones are 1/4 composed of Salt, and when we don’t get enough of it from food, our bones lose this Salt, which triggers the onset of Osteoporosis.
  • Essential for healthy, strong teeth.
  • Stabilizes blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health.
  • Supports normal hormonal balance.
  • A deficiency can trigger seizures (sometimes goes together with Magnesium deficiency).
  • Suppresses stress hormones.
  • Improves metabolism.
  • Supports a healthy weight by deactivating large amounts of the hormone Cortisol, the excess of which is to blame for a slow metabolism and extra pounds.
  • Prevents dehydration of our body.
  • And finally — with Salt, everything always tastes better!

Which one to choose and how to use Salt?

I think it is already clear to everyone that white table salt is unsuitable for our nutrition.

The ideal replacement for it would be sea salt or pink Himalayan salt. I personally prefer Himalayan, because the oceans nowadays are already quite polluted, while the mountains have still preserved their purity and pristine nature.

This Salt can be found in a large supermarket or ordered online. Yes, of course, it will cost more than simple white salt, but aren’t all its beneficial properties worth it?

I also advise you to try to avoid consuming refined products. I don’t know about you, but I notice in myself that if I eat something that contains white salt (at a guest’s home or at a restaurant), afterward I am tormented by intense thirst that cannot be quenched with water.

This indicates that table salt shifts the electrolyte balance, causing thirst and making us drink water, which shifts this balance even further. Himalayan salt does not have a similar effect!

I no longer think about how much Salt I put in my food. I am not stingy and I salt to my taste!

It is especially important NOT to reduce the consumption of Salt and to salt generously for people suffering from thyroid problems and the so-called adrenal fatigue syndrome, which is observed in people who are constantly under stress.

Recently I started drinking specially infused salt water and I will definitely share about this in one of my upcoming posts!

I sincerely hope that this post has changed your opinion about Salt. And that now you will not think that it is a white death for you (I will let you in on a secret — that’s sugar!).

Eat natural salt to your heart’s content, salt your food to taste and give your body all those beneficial properties that natural, unrefined salt possesses!
