Tulsi or Holy Basil beneficial properties and uses. Where it came from and why it became so popular Tulsi or Holy Basil. What extraordinary and numerous beneficial properties it possesses. Methods of use.
I stumbled upon this extremely useful, as I call it, little herb completely by chance, when I was looking for natural remedies to deal with my terribly exhausted adrenal glands and anxiety. It turned out that Holy Basil occupies a special and very important place in Ayurveda.
The leaves of this shrub are not only rich in numerous vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, but also in special substances that help our body adapt to stress. And hardly anyone can argue with me that in our time stress is one of the most serious factors and triggers for the development of serious diseases and conditions.
But the unique abilities of this sacred plant of India extend far beyond a simple calming effect. And that is what I will tell you about in this post.
What is Tulsi?
It is the king of plants in India. There this small shrub can be found in every home or, more accurately, courtyard.
In Hinduism this unique plant is considered sacred and therefore has rightly earned the corresponding name — Holy Basil. It has been used in Ayurveda for several thousand years and is called the “elixir of life.”
Only recently has Tulsi begun to spread here and very quickly, and I believe quite deservedly, has won its popularity. It is mainly used in the form of dried leaves for brewing tea. I get it here

Beneficial properties of Holy Basil
The numerous beneficial properties of this plant are amazing. It contains Folic acid, Vitamins A, C, E, K, Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc and Phytonutrients.
Strengthens the immune system
It has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. And at the same time, it stimulates the normal function of our immune system. In India, these leaves are brewed together with ginger and used during colds. It also has expectorant and antitussive effects. Which, again, comes in handy during a cold.
Stabilizes blood sugar levels
It is rich in a unique substance called Eugenol, which stimulates the normal function of pancreatic cells that store and then release Insulin into the blood. By doing so, they improve our sensitivity to Insulin and normalize blood sugar levels.
Adapts our body to stress
It helps maintain normal levels of the stress hormone Cortisol in our body. Unique antioxidants also prepare our body at the molecular level for stress, which allows us to endure it with minimal losses. It is ideal as an additional remedy for combating Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome.
Cleanses the kidneys
It removes toxins from our kidneys. It reduces the level of Uric acid in the blood, which is one of the main causes of kidney stone formation.
Supports the normal function of the gastrointestinal tract
It improves the digestion and absorption of nutrients from food, fights constipation, gas formation and diarrhea. In a word, it brings our stomach and intestines back to normal.
Has anticarcinogenic activity
Some studies conclude that these extraordinary leaves are able to limit the spread of the blood vessels that feed malignant tumors. And without proper nutrition, a tumor cannot supply itself with the substances it needs for development and begins to die off.
Has an anti-inflammatory effect
Many diseases develop in us because of so-called chronic inflammation, one of the main causes of which is an improper balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, arising from excessive consumption of vegetable oils. Holy Basil helps balance these fatty acids, thereby reducing the level of inflammation and consequently the risk of developing a large number of chronic diseases.
Normalizes hormonal balance
Hormonal imbalance is a very common phenomenon in our time. There is not a single organ or system that would not suffer from an excess or deficiency of one hormone or another. This Indian miracle is able to restore normal hormone levels; they stimulate energy synthesis and accelerate our metabolism.
How can Tulsi be used?
* The most common and simple method of using these unusual leaves is brewing tea. For a visible effect, it is enough to drink 2 cups of strongly brewed tea a day.
I simply boil water in a kettle and pour it over a tablespoon of dried leaves with the addition of grated fresh ginger. I steep for 5 minutes, strain, and drink.
Tulsi has a very pleasant taste, spicy and tart. And as I already mentioned, I started drinking this tea while battling Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome, but even now, having restored them, I still continue to drink it. It, together with Magnesium , keeps everyday stress away from me.
Important: do not indulge in this tea if you suffer from low blood sugar levels and if you take blood-thinning medications like Warfarin.
* Holy Basil can also be used for skin care. It is able to fight conditions such as pimples, acne, and eczema. I do not suffer from this, but Janu told me that in India they brew Tulsi and then wipe their face with this solution using a cotton pad 2 times a day. The shelf life of such a toner is, of course, minimal, about 3 days in the refrigerator.
* These leaves are also able to fight dandruff and improve the overall condition of the scalp, normalizing sebum secretion, fighting hair loss, and stimulating their growth.
For 2 weeks now, I have been doing a special wiping of the scalp with a Tulsi infusion. All my life I suffered from so-called “oily hair” and I had to wash my hair every single day.
And now, finally, with the help of natural methods and components, I have reached the point where I wash my hair once every 5 days and my hair looks fresh, lays well, and finally grows excellently. But, as they say, there is no limit to perfection.
I am still in the process of discovering all the possibilities of this unusual plant and will definitely let you know if I find other, no less useful methods of using it.
You can buy Holy Basil, like everything else, online. On the well-known to many iherb, various types of Tulsi tea are sold.

I used to buy them too, until I came across dried leaves in a simple bulk bag at an Indian store at a very attractive price!
So look around, maybe at a pharmacy, a large supermarket, a health food store, or if there is an Indian store in your city, you will be able to find Tulsi in bulk.
