What Are Hormones?

These are the so-called transmitters of important signals in our body. They travel through the bloodstream to tissues and cells, activating one effect or another.

To understand how and where these substances work, let me lay out for you their functions and the roles they perform:

Steroid hormones (the source of which is cholesterol)

  • Estrogen. Produced by: the ovaries, placenta, mammary glands, liver, adrenal glands, hypothalamus, and others. Necessary for proper female sexual development, pregnancy, memory; it has anti-aging activity.
  • Progesterone. Produced by: the ovaries, placenta. Participates in female sexual development, menstruation, pregnancy.
  • Testosterone. Produced by: the ovaries in women and the testicles in men. Responsible for sexual development in men, sperm production, muscle and bone development.
  • Dehydroepiandrosterone. Produced by: the adrenal glands and the brain. Necessary for maintaining a healthy body mass, bone strength, immunity, a healthy heart, and resistance to stress.
  • Pregnenolone. Produced by: the adrenal glands. Needed for good memory and resistance to stress.
  • Cortisol. Produced by: the adrenal glands. Responsible for resistance to stress, energy synthesis, has an anti-inflammatory effect, and influences mood.
  • Calcitriol. Produced by the skin, liver, and kidneys. Necessary for healthy bones, muscles, heart, immunity, metabolism, and the brain.

Peptide Hormones (often in prehormone form, requiring an activation process later)

  • Somatotropin (human growth hormone). Produced by: the pituitary gland. Regulates growth and development in children, regulates tissue growth and development and metabolism in adults.
  • Melatonin. Produced by: the pineal gland. Essential for healthy sleep, heart, immunity and cancer prevention.
  • Insulin. Produced by: the pancreas. Responsible for energy synthesis, blood sugar regulation and normal body weight.
  • Glucagon. Produced by: the pancreas. Signals the liver that it needs to release glucose into the bloodstream.
  • Prolactin. Produced by: the pituitary gland, mammary glands, uterus, prostate, skin and so on. Essential for lactation and for more than 300 diverse reactions in our body.
  • Adrenocorticotropic hormone. Produced by: the pituitary gland. Stimulates the release of Cortisol.
  • Leptin. Produced by: fat cells. Involved in the regulation of fat metabolism and metabolism.
  • Ghrelin. Produced by: the stomach and pancreatic gland. Function: stimulates the feeling of hunger.
  • Parathyroid hormone. Produced by: the parathyroid gland. Controls the amount of calcium in the bones and blood.

  • How to Restore Hormonal Balance Naturally?

    Nutrition

    1. Healthy fats and Cholesterol are necessary for hormone synthesis. Eat more coconut, butter, olive oil, avocado, eggs, fish.
    2. It turns out that one simple carrot a day can also help normalize hormones.
    3. Eat liver at least once a week. It is a super food containing true vitamin A, which cannot be obtained from plant-based foods, and is necessary for hormone synthesis!
    4. Remove pro-inflammatory Omega-6. The main source is vegetable oils. You can read more about why consuming vegetable oils is a bad idea for health here.
    5. Remove caffeine. It excites our nervous system and directly affects hormone synthesis and activity. You can read here why I believe coffee can only be drunk by absolutely healthy people, and even then rarely.
    6. Drink Salt Water every morning on an empty stomach. This not only saturates our body with necessary electrolytes, helps fight sugar cravings, and also normalizes hormones. Making salt water is very easy and simple.
    7. Avoid all products containing soy. Soy contains pseudo-hormones, which again affects their balance. This also includes soy milk.
    8. Always pre-prepare grains, legumes and nuts. If you don’t do this, then over time a rather serious chronic leaky gut syndrome may develop, when undigested food particles and toxins enter the bloodstream from the intestines, spreading throughout the body. This leads not only to food intolerances and autoimmune diseases, but also to hormonal problems.
    9. Eat natural probiotics. An ideal and inexpensive source is homemade fermented foods such as sauerkraut, beet kvass, kombucha and kefir. A healthy gut — a healthy hormonal balance!
    10. Drink bone broth every day. It has a huge number of beneficial properties, including restoring the balance of hormones needed by our body. For example, I already can’t imagine a day without a cup of warm broth.

    Supplements

    1. Magnesium. I’ll repeat once again, saying that this mineral is deficient in almost every person. And it is specifically necessary, in particular, for the synthesis of sex hormones and the growth hormone somatotropin. I wrote about what else magnesium is needed for here, and here you can read how to make magnesium oil at home.
    2. Maca. A famous vegetable in Latin America, similar to a radish. It increases the synthesis of hormones, normalizing them and in addition to this affects our energy level in the most positive way. I have felt this for myself. I use this Maca in capsules. 1. Vitamin D3. It is necessary for hormones, and its deficiency, which is as common as magnesium deficiency, leads not only to hormonal imbalance, but also to serious health problems. I use this one during the sunless months.
    2. Tulsi, or holy basil. This herb, famous in Ayurveda, is a so-called adaptogen and has a positive effect on hormones, in particular the thyroid gland. I drink tea with Tulsi every day; I buy it at an Indian store. You can also find it here.

    Environment

    1. Toxins. It is clear that it is almost impossible to avoid them all—we do not live in a vacuum—but we still need to try. Get rid of plastic, replacing it with glass, ceramics, porcelain, and so on. Choose the right and safe cookware for preparing food. What is the point of cooking the healthiest food if, in the end, the cookware itself saturates this food with toxins?

    Sleep and stress

    1. We cannot be fully healthy and boast a normal hormonal balance if we are constantly chronically sleep-deprived or under stress. You absolutely must sleep in complete darkness (your hormones will immediately thank you for it). Try the meditations that Victoria offers—this is one of the best ways to find inner calm and harmony. Well, I think you already know for yourself that you need to be less nervous!

    Physical activity

    1. Don’t overexert yourself! And this means that you shouldn’t do exhausting hour-long cardio or long runs. First of all, it’s stress for the body, as a result of which the body begins to synthesize free radicals on its own, leading to premature aging and chronic diseases. It is precisely for this reason that I recommend short high-intensity interval training, yoga, Pilates and super slow exercises with dumbbells (this is Dr. Mercola’s new system, which I am currently testing on myself). But if you want to normalize your hormones, it is recommended that you walk a lot and, if possible, swim.

    Sort Out Your Hormones

    1. Most of us suffer from leptin resistance. Deal with it and then you will be able to restore full balance in the hormonal system. And of course take care of your adrenal glands, just as they take care of you. Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome — a very common phenomenon in our modern world, caused by chronic stress.

    Contraceptives

    1. Nowadays birth control pills are prescribed left and right. But did you know that it takes more than a year to restore your hormones after them? Or that they multiply the risk of developing breast cancer, heart attack, gallbladder disease, weight gain, mood problems and so on? Jokes and games with hormones are bad — remember this. They never pass without a trace and it takes years to bring them back to normal.

I hope my list helps you and that with the help of proper nutrition and a natural lifestyle it will be easier for you to overcome “problem hormones” and improve your health and well-being.

      Victoria, good day!
Evgenia (the article’s author), in the paragraph about supplements, provides a link on how to make magnesium oil at home, but in fact there is no link(( I looked myself, but there is such a mass of different recipes online… If it’s possible to include the author’s recommendation, it would be great, because the problem with magnesium deficiency is truly catastrophic!
